I'm not sure whether it's a regional or nationwide thing, but if you think you might have even the *slightest* use for 16/4 in-wall plenum-rated speaker wire, check out the "cut wire" section at your local Home Depot stores.

I just bought ~170 feet (all they had), and got change back from a $20 bill. That's 11c/foot, vs the normal ~64c/foot. I have no immediate use for it, but I knew I'd hate myself if I didn't try to buy up to 250 feet of it just to keep around for future home AV wiring needs :)

Are you talking about wire already cut from their big rolls? That's usually custom-length cut wire and then returned, I think....so probably wouldn't be at all stores.

No, it was fresh off the spool. I'm guessing they decided to discontinue it, and the roll on the rack was their last one.

To be honest, I've never fully understood the absolute urgency stores like Home Depot seem to have for *instantly* purging their stores of a discontinued item, even if (in the case of something like a 500' spool of wire) it takes almost no space, and could almost certainly be sold in its entirety at full price over the next 3-5 years. A big-city Ace hardware store might have a certain model of pink, green, yellow, or baby-blue toilet sitting on the top of a row of shelves for 25 years, but they know... someday, some desperate person will come running in and pay twice as much as that toilet cost when it was a newly-shelved item (adjusted for inflation!) because his 25 year old toilet cracked when somebody dropped something on it, and it's the only exact replacement within 200 miles he can get *right now* (because Home Depot & Lowes only sell white toilets). I paid $99 + tax for a 24' fiberglass extension ladder a few weeks ago because (god forbid) Home Depot decided to switch brands from "Louisville" to "Husky", and that particular store had a few dozen Louisville ladders left that it just *had* to get rid of *instantly*. Not that I'm complaining, of course... just admitting that I think they take it to perverse extremes and end up hurting themselves. Did I mention the laser-guided wet tile saw they encouraged me to steal from them for $69 (original price: $274), along with its matching stand (original price: $79) for $12? ;-)

I think that I may make a run to HD before they close tonight.... Getting ready for my prewire coming up. I'll buy all 500 feet if they have it. Do you have a SKU?

Nuts, I could use a 24' fiberglass ladder, too! May have to start shopping at home depot more...I don't think Lowes does any of that craziness, or I've never seen it (and I've sure been in there often enough!)

Stopped at two home depots this morning and bought 2 500' spools for $42 each. Stopped at another and they were priced at $84 per 500' talked them into selling me them for $42 each. Wasn't the full 500' on each spool but was missing 100' or so on each so around 800' for $84 on that run. May try and hit a third store later tonight.

This is perfect timing for my upcoming prewire. Even if it's way too much, I can't pass this price up!

Glad to hear you were able to get it, too :-)

One thing I've learned over the past year... if something's clearance-priced at ONE Home Depot, it's almost always clearance-priced at the others, and they just haven't updated the prices on the items themselves. On the other hand, the prices at Lowe's stores across Miami & Fort Lauderdale seem to vary wildly, with no obvious logic, and they generally WON'T price-match other Lowe's stores unless it's a clearance item. This is particularly common with accessories, like if you buy some power tool and want to buy something that's optional, but intended to be used with that specific item (like the stand to a power saw). Two randomly-chosen stores will probably have the big item for the same price, but the stand, or blade, or something similar at one store might be $19.99, and $34.99 at another store. Overall, Home Depot seems to have the best deals on random items, but Lowe's seems to have the best deals on special-ordered merchandise that they ended up holding for some reason (toilets, tubs, etc).

Checked my Home Depot this afternoon. 16/4 onsale, normally .89/ft, now only .69/ft. No bargains here. ;)

I would keep watching it... Mine had 3-4 "clearance" markdowns plastered on the shelf. I think that .69 was one of them. I think that it went to .34 then to .11

For the record I think that .11 is home depots "clear it off the shelf for scrap" price and stuff really isn't supposed to be sold at that and the product is supposed to be shipped off to a liquidator.

agreed with wire

However thye make exclusive contracts forcing them to dump existing inventory making up for it by getting specially reduced priced - in this case - husky ladders.

F husky btw. Everything I buy from them sucks

Bought 250' today, all they had.

Doesn't seem like real high quality stuff - thin jacket. But I guess as long as it gets the job done, and is in-wall rated, who cares?

Thanks for the heads up miamicanes.

I hit three stores and couldn't find any full rolls (despite what their inventory said), but scored two partial rolls from the cut wire rack at two stores. One was 400' (the manager actually made the guy pull it off, measure, and rewind it) and he marked it down to .8 a foot, otherwise at .11 it would have cost more than the $42 full roll price. The second store just looked at the roll, decided it was "about" 200 feet (looks more like 300 to me), and wrote it up for 200 @ .11. So, I ended up with 600' - 700' for $54. Not bad!

Went back today and the price was still $.69. Figured I'd ask so found someone in another department. He had no idea so he called the main office upstairs for a price check and quantity. They had 1700 feet at $.08 a foot. I took it all. Not as good as the stuff I usually buy for jobs but at $.08/ft, you can't beat it.

THANKS! I initially had ordered just enough to do my theater from Monoprice.com... After seeing this i called HD and had them set aside a 500' roll for 0.10 / foot. AWESOME. Now I should have enough to do my kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms... :)
