How to adjust contrast on M1KP LCD display?

I have an M1KP keypad with a display that can only be read from an extreme angle. Viewed from any normal angle most of the display appears black. Most devices with LCD displays allow contrast to be adjusted through menus or in the worst case by using a screwdriver to adjust a pot on the circuit board. But there is no obvious way to adjust this particular keypad's LCD contrast.

Does anyone know the trick to making these keypads readable?

thanks

I was able to adjust backlight brightness. The problem is the LCD contrast, which when set too high makes it nearly impossible to read the display.

I have attached photos to illustrate the problem. Viewed from the front it is impossible to make out most characters on the display. Viewed from the side, it is possible to read the display, though with some difficulty.

Wow, there has got to be something wrong either the wiring or the keypad itself. How hard would it be to wire that directly to the panel?
