HT + Wii Play/Exercise Room

My wife rarely is interested in technology, but this week she bought a Nintendo Wii + Wii Fit balance table with the excuse of making exercises. So, I used the excuse of the Wii to prepare a small HT room, and got a new flat panel 40 LCD TV on Black Friday (yes!).

I want to arrange the room in a way that maximizes open space. Since I have concrete walls, I cannot hide the cables inside the walls. So I plan to build a furniture to place below the TV in a way that the Wii, cable box and any future media player or PC is arranged vertically against the wall. This should save me about 8" as compared to the typical horizontal position. I will need to invent a trick so that the IR signals reach the sensors.

My main question is for those with experience with the Wii for doing exercises. Should an area of about 10'x8' be OK? What if I want to make exercises together with her? Are 10' OK for two people? See attached diagram of the room. The room is about 10'x'12 and I want to place the TV in the 10' wall. If I take about 4' for TV furniture and sofa I should still have about 8' of remaining space (long) and the full 10' wide.

The other option is to locate the TV in the long 12' wall, but then I would have a lot of space to move sideways but nothing to move back and forward (about 4' only). In addition, the sofa would block the closet doors.

What do you suggest? Is the almost square arrangement good enough for the Wii games? I have no idea of what space is required for the Wii Sports and Wii Fit routines.

I do the same thing, although I have normal walls and hence can bury the walls. I have nearly the same dimensions as you. It's eminently doable, although things like Wii Tennis do get a little tight. I only have a single Wii fit, but you could put two side by side in a slightly staggered format (one Wii fit about 3' closer to the TV than the other to get a little more shoulder room. Some Wii fit exercises require leaning from the side. I'm not actually sure two people can do the Wii fit concurrently, so it might only be an issue for "normal" Wii games.

All that said, I do wish I had more room. I don't actually have that ability though, so I get over it.

sorry....i know i shouldn't but can't resist....

If you want to 'make excersises with her' think about the size of a king size bed (roughly 7' x 7'). It seems to provide enough space for good 'excersises'....

Just providing a point of reference here. :)

esp considering he's married, which means the bed is only really used for sleeping...

Good one. That should be the trick since, as much as I try (and I try hard), I can't shed pounds in my queen size bed. :)
