Hi! Since I've joined the forum last July and only posted once, I haven't visited CocoonTech forum, so I'm new to home security, but not new to home automation. I'm getting Elk M1 Gold pretty soon, since I wanted to experienment with Elk M1 Gold and get familiar with it, even though I read the installation manual and user guide for Elk M1 Gold. Before I read the installation manuals for Honeywell Vista 20P, DSC Power series of security systems, Visonic/Rokonet all-in-one security systems, etc. I'm a computer programmer and I'm also a computer-geek!
I'm a student at Tallahassee Community College and I live in an apartment. I wanted to stay away from all-in-one security systems because I don't like anything that integrates in one houseing -- siren, keypad, dialer, control panel, etc. and this is even in a secured location. To me, it's just not worth the investment for buying a nwe all-in-one panel if the keypad with dialer/siren built-in gets smashed. Of course, when it comes to component-based security systems, I'd have to have a wireless receiver, which is no big deal, except that there's no wireless sirens out there, so a GE/Caddx NX-548E wireless receiver needs to be a transceiver in order to tell the wireless siren to turn off after a certain cutoff time. It'd be great if SmartLabs (the maker of Insteon) could develop a version of X10 PowerHorn (X10 protocol unreliable) aka "Insteon-compatible Siren, but maybe Elk can do that (instead of SmartLabs)?
Anyway, I'm not new to home automation. I once started out as IBM Home Director since my mom purchased an IBM Aptiva L series computer since 1997 (oh, the old days of IBM 17" MM75 monitor with "Sound By Bose" speakers and a push-in hybrid volume control and on/off switch). Since I don't have Home Director anymore, after many years of not having home automation, during 2006, I once got an X10 Starter Kit -- big mistake! I had problems with SocketRocket, where the screw-in base gets stuck in the wall fixture, as it came off of SocketRocket. Plus, I didn't know that the adheisive in X10 stick-in wall switch can damage the wall paint, which makes me wonder why X10 didn't test a stick-in wall switch against the finished-painted wall surface... I didn't know Insteon cam out a year before since I did a lot of research on home automation and I know X10 too well that X10 use to do so well with marketing hype with woman who's so excited about X10, even X10 Protector Plus (okay, I know I shouldn't get anyone started, and I'm glad I didn't buy one). Overall, my research has came a long way since I asked questions in the Home Security Store forum, and just a few questions over at SmartHome forum regarding Elk M1 Gold, and then I've learned that a couple of members here have Elk M1 Gold! Call me closed-minded/biased, but I think it's about time for home security companies, like Honeywell, Visonic, GE, etc. to move away from X10 and support better protocols, like Z-Wave, UPB, Insteon, etc.
Anyway, I just want to say hello all and I'm happy to be here!
