Like most people here, I really like the idea of home automation. Also like most, I am on a tight budget. Lucky for me, I like to tinker. Some of the projects found at http://www.instructables.com can be applied to home automation. This digital picture frame is a perfect example:

The above instructable talks about using a PSone 5" LCD and a SanDisk Digital Photo Viewer to make a digital picture frame. The PSone LCD uses a composite video adapter and can also be adapted to use VGA @ 640x480 resolution (details found here http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2004/07/07/psone_lcd/1 ).
I was thinking of using this project to display composite video from the camera at my front door. I can mount the picture frame right above my intercom as I already have some RG-6 routed to the same place.
