I recently received this CES newsletter from Intellon that I though others might want to read. It further describes their plug in networking/video distribution capabilities over your existing power lines:

INTELLON DEMONSTRATES NEXT GENERATION 200 Mbps POWERLINE TECHNOLOGY FOR HOME VIDEO CONNECTIVITY AT CES 2004

Intellon’s PowerAVä technology enables simultaneous transmission of multiple High-Definition Television (HDTV) streams over electrical wires to any room in the home

LAS VEGAS, NV – January 6, 2004 - Intellon Corporation (intellon.com), the world leader in integrated circuits (ICs) for high-speed powerline networking, is introducing its PowerAV technology at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) by streaming three simultaneous video streams over standard electrical wiring in its booth. The demonstration is available at CES, Booth #19292 in the Las Vegas Convention Center South 1&2, January 8 – 11, 2004.

The demonstration will show how Intellon’s PowerAV was designed to support the distribution of multi-stream HDTV and SDTV media throughout the home. Three video sources of MPEG2 HD and SD content will be transmitted over the same power line network and will be displayed on three flat panel televisions in real time.

PowerAV achieves physical layer rates in excess of 200Mbps and actual data rates of more than 100Mbps – faster than any flavor of Wi-Fi. But what truly makes PowerAV stand out from other networking technologies is its quality of service (QoS) features specific to the needs of video. PowerAV’s protocol was designed to reliably, efficiently and securely transmits isochronous traffic, such as MPEG2 video. Intellon’s solution tightly controls jitter and latency, and provides a grant of capacity mechanism, all while accommodating lower bandwidth traffic like IP data or voice. PowerAV gives consumer electronics companies the reliability they need for mass-market AV products and allows service providers to offer advanced services such as multi-room DVR.

“We are excited to extend our leadership in HomePlug 1.0 silicon to the world of video distribution,†said Charlie Harris, CEO of Intellon Corporation. “Our PowerAV technology is the only cost-effective solution that provides the speed, security and robust coverage required for video connectivity inside the home, while remaining compatible with HomePlug 1.0 traffic.â€

Intellon’s PowerAV prototype integrates a highly advanced OFDM-based physical layer (PHY) and a media access control layer (MAC). It is a real-time representation of Intellon’s future INT6000 high-speed powerline silicon, which will be available in production later in 2004.

Intellon invented the baseline technology that was adopted by the HomePlug Alliance as the industry standard for HomePlug 1.0 powerline networking. Today, the company has the dominant share of the global HomePlug market, with customers shipping dozens of products based on Intellon’s HomePlug 1.0 ICs in the Americas, Europe and Asia. In addition to PowerAV, Intellon’s booth at CES will also feature the world’s first HomePlug 1.0 ADSL modem/gateway and several brand new HomePlug audio streamers. Intellon’s PowerAV technology is an extension of the same technology foundation that made HomePlug 1.0 a success. Intellon has submitted its PowerAV technology for consideration and possible use in the baseline technology for HomePlugAV, the next generation HomePlug standard for video connectivity.
