Leaving the Net Sooner Than Expected

Mike, even if you don't want to keep Time Warner, you still should find out what the hell is going on, they might owe you a lot of money. I would love to know why you are paying more than I am, yet we are in the same area.

I'll probably try to get some answers tomorrow. The DSL line seems pretty stable so I feel I can threaten to end my service with the confidence of knowing that I can follow through and do it if I have to.

Mike, I don't live very far from you and I pay TWCNY $100/month for Digital Cable w/ Stars, digital phone and Road Runner with 8 Mb down / 756 kb up.

I didn't even know 8 Mb was an option. Maybe I have that and don't know it. I'll have to do some kind of speed test before I get it disconnected.

Things in the U.S are much cheaper than Canada :-)

For a 4 Mbit down and 2.5Mbit upload I pay $175 a month..it is a business account and they say the limit is 10GB but they never enforce ever.

I also have a 2.5 Mbit down and 1.5 Mbit upload connection, that one costs $135 I believe.

So basically I pay for $310 cdn monthly for two seperate adsl modems for my business.

**Here in Edmonton they do have Cable with 7Mbit downloads but I used it before and it was slow at night..everybody leeching movies or something and also they enforced caps and charge you heavy if you go over the cap limit.

Both my lines are ADSL and business connections but they also offer a package that goes with your phone for I think $49.00 and its 1mbit up/down

*All prices in Canadian dollars

Maybe you also have Digital Cable and phone service and don't know it! ;)

No. I won't allow digital cable boxes in the house because they mess up the modulators I use for internal stations. The lady at Time Warner tried to get me to sign up for digital phone but her line had so much static on it that I couldn't understand what she was saying.

Just hit a snag with the DSL line. The DSL modem is also a router (a Cisco 677 I think). This means that port forwarding needs to be set up in that router to forward everything to my main router before it can be forwarded to actual devices. I don't think I have any passwords to this DSL router and I don't think Alltel is likely to tell me how to get into it.

It could be your regular DSL user id and password, or password could be blank. Also, you could ask them for a newer modem or turn off the routing functions.

Check these out...

Default password for my old Cisco 677 was 'cisco' (user and pass).

If none of that helps, simply call Alltel. If they tell you they can't give you access simply tell them you need to rearrange your network and if they can't help you're going to cancel and just keep cable. Hopefully you won't have to cancel both!

Thanks Steve, I'll look at those manuals and see what I can do with the Cisco. In the mean time I called Time Warner and they said I did have the 8 Mb service. They knocked it back down to 5 Mb which makes monthly charge $45 instead of $70 and does not require any contract extension. I can live with that for now while I do some experimenting with the DSL line.

I see one of the options on the Cisco 677 is to put it into bridge mode. Has anybody tried this? Seems like it would be the easier than setting up a lot of forwarding to my Linksys router.
