The VRCZ4-1LX is a 4 button controller but will not control a load.

So does it need its own box in the wall with power to operate, since i cant take out an existing switch and replace that switch with it?

Could I use it in a 3 way application, where by a put a levtion dimmer/switch in one of the two 3-way switchs, then install the 4 button in the second of the 3-way switch locations and leave the traveler wire capped and disconnected at each end?

The VRCZ4-1LX does not control a load but requires 120VAC (hot + neutral). You can break up a 3-way to make a location for it. They also make a VRCZ4-MRX that does control a load. If you wanted to use that in a 3-way, you would have to use a VRCZ1-1LX on the other end.

I bought the VRCZ4-1LX, not realizing it didnt manage a load. I have since bought an MRX which works.

I guess i miss the concept of the -1lx - what was its original design intent - you almost have to have a have a special box installed with power but no load. If i can use it in another location as part of a 3 way then its seems useful.

i totally agree. i personally believe it was just timing. there was a rush to market and to handle the load came out years after this unit. it is not just leviton with this issue (which looks to now be corrected with the MRX) but all manufacturers did the same thing.
