M1XEP bites the dust ..

So last night, Homeseer reports communication issues with my XEP, and before I get a chance to look at it, it completely dies. Symptoms:
  • DIGI RJ45 jack on the PCB is VERY hot to the touch
  • No lights on the RJ45 JACK (or switch, have tried new cables)
  • Slow orange blinking light on the PCB (stays on for ~4 seconds, turns off for .5 second)
  • Once in a while I can hear a short burst of a high pitch noise, almost sounds like a failing power supply (with bad caps)
  • House is in chaos due to lack of M1 connectivity ;)
I am guessing it is totally dead, but wanted your opinion anyways. I'll have to order a new one, but what a bad time to fail, with the 4th of July weekend coming up etc.

$172 with shipping from Amazon.

I suspect your time is worth too much to try and figure out whether it is a fried 10 cent componant or a proprietery Elk part that has gone bad. Plus, soldering on those little things is like impossible.

Maybe when you get a new one you can put them side by side with your multimeter and figure it out, but without a reference I don't know how you could solve it.

I do have another dead XEP laying around (lightning hit years ago), I guess I could check if the digi chip can be swapped. I am starting to look like a 'Serial' killer ;) I might try to use a regular serial/IP adapter to compensate for the loss until I have a new XEP.

I think the Digi component is the actual server for the ELk program and Java console, etc. not just a LAN device.

I'd say to call ELk support but they don't support end users anymore. :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

Maybe Spanky will chime in.

Yep, pretty sure it is the server, just haven't looked at the soldering yet, to see if it's something I can replace.

Since they are both dead, I suppose there is no harm.

But, just becuase that part is hot doesn't mean it is dead, or even if it is dead, it doesn't mean that it committed suicide. It may have been victimized by some other part (the perp) in this "serial" killing.

Good luck with the soldering! Take a couple beta-blockers and stay clear of the caffeine.

You could try sending it back to Elk. Maybe they'll fix it for you out of warranty, free of charge. Depending on the issue it might not hurt to try.

ELK has kindly offered to try to fix it, so that's what I am going to do. I am currently using an older StarTech Serial-over-IP adapter, so my touch screens and HA drivers keep functioning.

Elk has top-notch customer service, in my experience. They've gone above and beyond what was expected from me in the past and they've won my trust and future business.
