Mouting items on vinyl siding

Gents,

To mount some ELK ZTS's and a RT1+SLA on my Vinyl siding what method do i use?

I want them to be mounted straight by the siding is obivously angled.

Do you make a bigger hile in the vinyl and use standoff against the underlying plywood or something?

My builder said to be carefull to allow the binyl to move or it could buckly.

I figured using a exacto or something to cut oblong holes to alow movement and then using woodscrew with a tubular standoff or something would do the trick.

Any suggestons?
 
Check your local Lowes or Home Depot - in the area with the vinyl siding; there is a mounting block that is designed to mount an outside light. The back side is angled and notched to match the profile of the siding and the front is flat for mounting the light. From memory the overall size is about 8" high by 6"wide but don't hold me to that. There is a hole in the middle meant for the electrical box. If I can find a picture or link, I'll post it.

roussell, don't you mean this item instead? The one you linked requires cutting the siding. Either way, roussell's advice regarding Home Depot is good, you can go there, and take a look at all the different types of mounting blocks they have.

While you are there, take a look at their books, showing how to install/cut vinyl siding (or google it). You do have to be careful, especially when it is colder outside.
 
I'm trying on unobtrusively mount these sensors and a block for lights is probably way to big.

It's hard to see how big that plate is that Dan linked to. Would i drill a hole in the siding for the wire and then have this block clip into the siding somehow?

It's getting below freezing here...so indeedi will be carefull with the siding...mountig may have to weight untill spring. I want to get my Elk RT1 / SLA combo up though.
 
The product roussell linked would look the 'best', but you have to verify that your Elk hardware will fit in it. I just went through this with my generator outlet. I grabbed a new outlet from the shelf, walked over to the siding section, and test fitted it. Glad I did, since it didn't work.

They are pretty easy to install, especially the 'split' unit, but if it is below freezing, I would recommend waiting untill it gets warmer. To hold you over, drill a hole just large enough for the wire right now, and you should be fine until you finish the install.

Yep, I actually did mean that one. Good catch, guess I got click-happy and grabbed the wrong URL. Like you said though, the best thing is to just go look around at the different types offered.

Builders call them "J blocks" they take the place of putting "J" channel around things like an electrical box. A sawzall works pretty good to put them in.
