Mute music when phone rings

Gordon,

Thanks, unfortunately I don't have any free serial ports so I can't hook up an external modem.

Is there some way I could detect if the phone is in use via an XAP device? I wonder if I could use a DS2405 to detect a voltage on the phone line?

There are many devices/circuits which can trigger a NC/NO contact when the line is in use. Do you have any device which supports I/O, so you could interface this kind of device?

I was actually thinking the same thing. Last night I was looking for a telephone circuit schematic that would pulse a relay every time the phone rings. I got side tracked though. Hopefully I can come up with something by later tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check out the ELK ring detector and circuit diagrams. With this information I'm sure I can get something working. I will post the results.

This is a really simple idea, kind of in the KISS category, but I have some old phones that have a light on them that blinks when the phone is ringing and then turns on steady when in use. You can probably pick up a $10 phone that has the transformer and circuit already wired, then just tear it apart and wire the led or light into your automation circuit. That way you know it is safe, and it cames in a nice plastic package. If not a light, then clip the ring indicator and wire it to a low voltage relay.

So what I'm saying is start with a phone and modify it to provide the outputs you need.

I'll jump onto this thread... I bought a ringer cut off device from Sandman and it works great and I can easily control it from my HVPro (will work with a relay on an elk too). He as tons of phone stuff that might fit your needs.
