New Elk touchscreen

The new touchscreen installed fine and appears to be working without issue until it has been on for a while. Overnight the touch screen stops responding. It still reports status changes but none of the buttons can be pressed. It's just locked up. I'm running the most recent version of the control and RP (5.0.10.0 and 2.0.10). The unit was installed according to the instructions and synchronized with the control and works fine until left alone for a period of time.

I can get it running again by cycling the M1 power. Any suggestions?

And to further the above question...if it is replacing an existing KP, did you do anything other than change out the plug? I was going to replace my main M1KP ("address 1") with the M1NAV (defaults to "address 1", I think), but am hesitating until I found out what I need to do other than physically swapping them out.

Note: the plug for the M1KP is larger than the plug for the M1KPNAV, but the number/color of the wires is the same.

Given the problem the OP reported, I decided to hook mine up as a new keypad. I assigned it an ununused number, plugged it into the DBH in the Elk can using a temporary "patch cable", and powered everything up. I enrolled it, and everything looks good...except, the Fn keys all show "sync required".

I went to the synchronization screen, pressed "Start", and it showed the "Area 1" icon and something like "synchronizing Area names 1". It stayed on that for a minute or two, then went back to the main screen. Fn keys still show "sync required". However, all the Fn keys do what they are supposed to. Tried synchronizing several times, but it never got past the Area 1 part, like it shows in the installation instructions. I tried pressing "Start" again after the Area icon was displayed, but that doesn't make it do anything different that I could tell.

I assume the "sync" is supposed to be similar to the ElkRMS sync (which always works for me), but the M1NAV sync didn't work for me.

Did you load the latest M1 firmware with support for the touchscreen ?

Nope. Elk bolded and underlined that part, and I still skipped right over it. In my [weak] defense, they should have put the note in the "Start-Up Screen" or "Synchronize" section instead of the installation section (or put it both places), for people like me who refuse to read instructions thoroughly before shooting themselves in the foot.

Thanks,
Ira

Hrm - a brand new product to the market requires you to update your system to support it?

Bastards!!

All in fun, of course ;)

I think I would have had a better chance of figuring it out myself if it hadn't worked at all with the older software version. Since everything worked with the old version except for the sync, I jumped past most of the documentation.

That said, speaking as a commercial software developer, one of the first rules of development is to always check for compatible software levels between "systems", and put out an appropriate message if they aren't compatible. Every data stream sent between systems/devices and every "control block" created should have a version identifier put in it by the code that created it.

However, in Elk's defense, passing back a version number as part of the data sent to the keypad may render older keypads inoperable.

I justgot mine today but i since i have no power i will have to wait until at least the weekend to install it. I dont want to be doing firmware updates etc on battery power ( you never know when the batteries will die and its been a few days already).

I have not powered it up yet but as long as its easily functional i think the design will have a high WAF. I might just install it at a customers house in a few days that had expressed interest since i can always put the old keypad back if i had to.

This keypad may finally get me some customers that liked the ELK but wanted a more high tech interface (again as long as its functional for people with big fingers etc).

Time will tell.

I couldn't get WAF approval... she thought the icons and display had a cheap/dated look to them.

I'm going to have to hire a good graphics artist to build my UI's for her to buy off...

Todd i have not actually powered mine up yet (still no power here from the hurricane). Maybe my wife wont like the graphics either. I needed this as a demo anyway.

On the Navigator touch screen, a software upgrade to the M1 is needed so that the names of zones, areas, outputs, etc. can be displayed on the screen. The older keypads only needed to display one name at a time. The Navigator can display multiple names in a selection list.

Did you guys see my video on the demo for this keypad at the last ISC West show? I thought the graphics looked [Tony Tiger Yell] grrrrrrrrrrrrreeeaattt! [/Tony Tiger Yell]
