Newby with a new system - HAI upstart questions

Hi All, first post here!

I have a new system. Just built the house the whole thing is ready to go we just moved in and I am wanting to get the system up and running.
Here's what we have installed:
HAI Omni IIe
HAI UPB PIM 36A00
20 or so HAI wall swtiches some dimmable some not
7 6 button scene controllers
8 or so plug in appliance controlers
I have a Mac laptop running XP (wierd I know but it works)

I have the dealer software for the HAI which works great, I can program in lights one at a time and run automation sequences (front porch light to come on at sunset ;) ) which means the PIM connects with the OMNI IIe. I can connect to the HAI omni panel to my computer two ways network or serial through a usb adapter. BUT, I can not connect the 36A00-1 HAI UPBâ„¢ Powerline Interface Module (PIM) to the laptop, I use the same port as i would with the omni IIe but it still will not connect. First question I have is the PIM uses a 6 line cord but the cord to serial connection used for the omni only has four wires on the female side, does the PIM have a seperate cord to serial device than the omni Panel maybe a 6 line on the female side? Next question is does the upstart program see all the switches that are present in the system and then i have to key in the program sequence to determine which one it is on the program?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hammy.

Not sure what combination of serial components you are using but this is a tricky area for linking stuff together. You do use a 4 line cord from the 36A00-1 PIM but you also need a serial adapter (36A05-4) to connect the 4 line cord to your 9 pin serial port on the PC. I suspect you do not have the correct serial adapter.

Edit....The 36A00-1 comes with a 6 wire cord and can be plugged directly to the Omni in that config. However, if you use the 36A00-1 PIM to try and hook to a PC, you need the 36A05-4 at the PC end...and I think it only needs a 4 wire for that configuration. As I said, this is a tricky area that is not well explained in HAI literature.

Also, be certain that PC Access isn't open as well. In my experience, if PC Access is open (whether connected or not) it grabs the serial port.

I think that's the problem I've been having with my Nuvo Music Port/ACS music server software, and the Nuvo Configurator software. I swap back and forth between the 2 programs on the same PC, and have to juggle the serial port connections every time, on the Edgeport/2. I think a PC reboot clears up the battle, a tip offered by another Nuvo user, in another thread.

Sorry, hijack now over.

I would agree HAI literature leaves a lot out, I would hope that there would be more information It all seems like you should just know this stuff.

Thanks for your quick replys.

OK at home now, I have a 21A05-1 Serial cable adapter to computer. This adapter works with the OMNI IIe but it will not work with the HAI PIM is there another adapter made for the PIM if so that is really not cool.

Thanks for your help. Again.

Yes, there is another adapter. I don't recall the part number but, I know it's another SKU.

Thanks I am ordering one today! They should have made the two serial connect to cord adapters the same.

Another complication would be if you use other serial devices that connect to PC. I am using the Rain8Net for irrigation and it connects to my PV via yet another serial adapter. All these adapters look alike so be sure to mark them with something to keep them straight. Some have a label but others do not.

PS...forgot to welcome you to the forum. Welcome aboard.

So I got the Connector on Friday yeah. I had all weekend to set up the network in upstart and tonight was trying to import all the names into the omni IIe There looks like no way to import them directly in. Does anyone know how to set this up easily instead of having to redo all that work in the PC access program.

Glad you got your communications worked out. However, the second part of your situation (loading everything into PC Access) just takes a lot of time to manually load all the info, settings, etc. Upstart does not have all the info you need to set up PC Access.
