Omnistat 2 --- CONTRACTOR ONLY RAN 3 WIRES!

Hey folks,

Little frustrated/dismayed but hoping this won't be the endof the world. My heating contractor only ran 3 wires to each of the thermostatlocations. I had requested 5 in addition to the CAT5e ran back to my OmniPro 2for use with my Omnistat 2 thermostats, but 3 is all I got. So is this going towork or what?

In the boiler room I've got a 6 zone TACO Switching Relay that receives input from 5standard two wire contact closure thermostats to run a circulator pump for eachzone. The house is way up in northern Maine so it is heating only. So how would you wire my Omnistats?

I was thinking I'd send 24 VAC from the auxiliary of theTaco switching relay board to PINS 1,2 of the Omnistat, 24 VAC Common to PIN 3,and PIN 6 back to the thermostat return input side of the TACO thermostat loop. Will this work or should I have mycontractors just rip out all the 3 wire and replace it with 6 wire? Rather notdo it is a can be avoided!

Three wire should be good for your application. Just supply 24vac to terminals 1 and 3 of your omnistat 2. Connect each leg of your 24vac relay coil to terminals 3 and 6 of omnistat 2.

You should run standard wiring - HVAC gear doesn't last forever and you should be prepared for a variety of equipment.

In my new home the HVAC guys ran TWO sets of 8 - an active set and a spare set. Of the active set they still only needed 5 of the 8. Running two sets was their standard.

Insist.

I'd call him up and bring him back, on his dime.

Explain the problem - you can both agree on what is fair.

Most definitely agree that this should have been done rightthe first time around and am beyond annoyed that it wasn't, but since theheating contractor WAS a close friend who was supposedly going to take suchgreat care of me by doing all the work by the hour and selling me the parts athis cost who ended up going way over budget (to the tune of $6000) I think I'llprobably cut my losses and deal with this myself. That aside, it would be justas much work to deal with rerunning/repulling wires now as it would be in thefuture so I think I'll cross that path when/if it ever happens. Importantlesson learned from all this… There is no better friend than a very welldocumented/signed contract. We did get the Omnistats to work as intended by connectingthe 24 VAC/Common terminals of the TACO relay board to PINS 1/3 of the Omnistatand then sending the control signal from PIN 6 of the Omnistat back to fire thecoil of the relay board for each respective zone.

Works like a charm!
