One reciever, two sources? Can they share the same input?

Hi,

I currently have the audio out of my LCD TV plugged into my Sony AV reciever (on the TV input), I also have my PC (hooked into HS to keep related) audio hooked into the "DVD" input on the reciever. Right now I tend to leave it on DVD so I can hear my HS2 messages (though they are infrequent).

I would prefer to leave the reciever input on TV & also plug the PC input in as well (using a splitter or picking a different aV input that has two R & W inputs. That way the TV could be coming out of all the speakers & if there is a HS2 message, it will announce it either in the middle of the TV sound, or if the TV is off, just getting the feed from the PC.

Can I do that or will I blow something up?

So essentially something to combine 2 analog audio signals into a single signal? Something to overlay a signal on top of another signal? Great question! I've wondered that too, so I'll be interested to know if there's something out there people are using for that.
 
Are you looking for an analog audio mixer? Lots of cheap ones around. I seem to remember Radio Shack at least to sell simple ones.

Im not sure what i am looking for but I do want to take two RCA White/Red inputs & I guess mix them. Yah, I guess a mixer would work if I can see one.

Can you find a radio shack link (i cant)?
 
Plug the TV into the line input of the PC and use the free mixer that comes with Windows. Leave the reciever on DVD.



or use a cheap CB speaker like you would in your Jeep for the announcements depending on the volume required.

That could work but I dont know that the HTPC will be on all the time. I was hoping just to plug both RCA jacks into the same reciever & have overlap (which shouldnt be often). The tv is off most of the time. I dont see it being a big problem if the TV is on & a HS2 message comes on as well.

Using a Y cable to connect 1 output to 2 inputs is generally safe, but that isn't your scenario.
Using a Y cable to connect 2 outputs to 1 input is risky. You may get away with it, but you risk output 1 trying to drive power back INTO output 2. Outputs are not designed to have things coming in to them.

Well add the word rackable and the cheap seems to disappear. That's because the cheap stuff is geared towards consumers that just want something cheap. Anything that is rack mount is going to be geared to more professionals and will be more expensive. That doesn't always mean better quality either. But in this situation, you don't need great quality, just something cheap.
