Hey all - I am going to build a server with raid, as well as remote backups, etc.. I plan on using Xbox in my gaming area, but will need a decent extender that can integrate and be operated by my wife, children, etc.

I have thought of building a PC and using as an extender, so i can access my itunes library, but I really could care less about that feature. I never listen to my music outside my office ;)

What do you suggest?

oh and a case to keep dust down. I dream of the day 3m filtrete starts making a case for filters.

Watercooling could be an option, but I am not enamored by the idea of having to change out water, esp since the pc will just sit as available.

Hi there, I wouldn't worry too much about dust. Just have the server in a low traffic area & keep it off of the ground. Some nicer cases will also have little filters in the fan grille, which usually catch a bit of dust.

Eventhough i don't have a rack i use a rackmountable server chassis that has air intakes on the front and exhaust on the rear. The entire front end is covered with a cleanable filter. After 1 year my case is still very clean inside. It sits in the basement though and hardly ever gets touched. I think the 'keep it off the floor' advice is probably the most significant.

If you have space, take the xbox apart and replace the cooling with big fan with less noise, that is probably also making xbox last longer.

You could always go the SageTV route... they have great extenders that run without fans and with a harmony remote even my wife who isn't a big fan of techie gadgets loves it. Also a port of My Movies is currently being developed for SageTV
