Rule for motion detector doesn't work.

I want to turn on a light whenever a basement motion detector detects movement. The detector is set to "Burglar Interior" and when it detects movement the M1 is aware of it (the keypad indicates the system is "Not Ready" to be armed).

If you create a rule like the following you'd expect the light to turn on ... but it doesn't.
WHENEVER Motion Basement (Zn 6) IS NOT SECURE
THEN TURN Basement Light (A1) ON

So I replaced the action with something simpler like: THEN ANNOUNCE Motion Basement (Zn 6)
and the M1 was silent despite the fact that "Zn 6" is programmed with two words: "Motion Basement".

So simple yet it doesn't work. What am I missing?

Are you sure you're violating the zone? Have you done a walk test?

Yea, you need to confirm for sure that zone is tripping causing the Not Ready condition. Also use the Test button in RP to make sure your THEN statements work.

Normaly I hope someone is available to promptly reply to my questions ... this time the solution was so obvious I was hoping no one was around to read my post!

When such a simple rule fails it can only mean one thing ... something is miswired. During programming, I mixed up the zones for my basement motion and glass-break detectors.

So if you clap your hands next to the glass-break detector, hard enough so they hurt, my basement lights will turn on. Yeah, that's real handy ... :)

OK, so I've reprogrammed the the two zones and the light now turns on when there's movement.

The 2007 version of the clapper....... :) I little pricey though!

I just posted how to create a motion-activated light in the Elk Products->Programming section.

Using an M1, a motion detector, an X10 controllable light, and three rules, you can duplicate a $20 motion-activated light switch.

However, those three rules are the foundation for building something far more sophisticated than a cheap motion-activated switch! <ahem> Or so I say to myself ...
