scaring the deer

The deer in my area have completely destroyed ny back row of bushes this winter, and I'm ashamed that I haven't done something about it until now. Apparently "Deer Off" does not work very well. This means war.

Anyone using some kind of 'dog bar' siren that they could recommend?

How big is the area you are trying to protect? Do you have to deal with snow?

Hey Dan... I dunno - maybe about 100' wide or so, 30' deep? I'm thinking of mounting something on the back of my house/deck, maybe a siren and a motion.

Yes, definitely have to deal with snow. I think the wooded area surrounding my house runs out of greens, so they visit my back yard's arborvitaes at night.

If it was a smaller area, I was going to suggest looking at the radar based motion unit I have for sale in the classifieds (requires 120V), but I believe its range is only around 15 feet or so. It does have a very loud and scary dog bark.

I've seen something once that had a motion detector on it and connected to your garden hose, so that when it detected motion, it'd set off basically a loud sprinkler. So it had motion and the action of spraying as a means to deterrence. I forget what it was called, but if you can get a hose out there (and presuming that it runs on batteries) then maybe that'd work?

That's why I asked about the snow. His garden hose will probably freeze over before it gets a chance to work. I believe this is the product you are talking about?

Ahh, thanks. looks like a cool device though!

They killed an entire apple tree few winters ago, so I gave up on replanting it until I fence the entire yard in, I don't see any other solution.

I'm not sure if my arborvitae's are dead, but they're pretty close to it I'd say. Pretty expensive, and I've been trying to get them to grow in for the past couple of years. They're supposed to form a "fence" to block off a water retention area that's an eye sore in my back yard. Now I have a row of about 30 practically dead bushes as an eye sore in addition to my water retention area.

How about a turret mounted assault rifle?

Is this what you were referring to, Beelzerob? It could be adapted for deer, except when they are really thirsty. Then it's a high speed drinking fountain. Automation rules!

And if you could get them to sit in an office chair.....
