SIM Card for Cellular Backup

Hello Cocooners,

Does anyone have a suggestion for a SIM card provider to be used in a cellular backup unit (best cost, reliability, etc)? Thanks!

What panel and what level of functionality you want will determine which device you need.

Normally the SIM card is perpackaged with the units that are highly integrated but I think there are some old style use an actual phone devices still around. These will mearly emulate POTS though it's not like the fully intgrated ones that sit on the keypad bus and can instantly communicate.

If you have an HAI control and you want 2-way communications with it, thats your device right there.

If you do not care about 2-way you can probably find something cheaper but really I wouldn't waste the time.

I use honeywell 7845i-GSM which is triple path GSM, SMS, TCP/IP but it's really only helpful if you have a Honeywell control. It can be made to work with any panel but for the cool stuff you basically have to buy a communicator from the the same people who make the control.

I use the uplink anynet module... it may have a SIM card built in, but I don't think so. it's communications are equivalent to text messages rather than actual phoneline communications, if memory serves me well.

The HAI cellular module will work with an AT&T GO Phone Sim card. A call will cost you about $.25, plus you have to keep the card renewed every month or so at $15 per renewal.

We did testing of the cellular module from the origonal manufacturer in the far east. It works quite well. It makes a direct call to the central station without going through a backend server. It can also send SMS messages to a cell phone upon alarm.

You can connect your house telephones to it and call out from any house telephone or if your landline fails it will use the cellular network to make outgoing calls.

You can call into the unit, but it does not have a ringer circuit to ring the telephones unless the manufacturer has added it to the cellular module which we requested.

Thanks Spany and Delic. Anyone know of a cheaper Sim card service? Also, has anyone got this to work with VOIP from the perspective if connecting it to the house telephones? thanks!

FWIW, the Anynet device does have an internal sim card in a slot. It is not exactly meant to be user replaceable, but it's there. You are right that it is not a voice module. Data only.

The Anynet/Nextalarm combo is a slick setup for alarm monitoring especially when used with an Elk M1G and expansion module. With the discount provided by my homeowner's insurance, the annual alarm monitoring fee was nearly a net zero out of pocket expense.
