Standard Rack width?

Does anyone know if there's a standard width for rack components?

I got a free rack from work that was getting thrown out, I've got a Cisco 2948 switch going in it and need to buy a 4U case to fit it, but i keep seeing different
numbers on cases when I look at them...

19"
23"
17"
etc.

19" is the 'popular/mainstream' standard but there is also a 23" standard.

It's mentioned in Dan's article link above, but just to make sure you know, the "19" inches is the distance between the mounting rails (i.e. not the overall "rack" case width).

Yeah, but if you have the wrong rack width (try saying that fast 5 times), you can always make your own "adapters".
