The eighth deadly sin: "Reply"

Good morning, fellow Cocooners!

Today's sermon is about the evils of the "Reply" button. Closely related to "sloth", "Reply" is the lazy way of replying to a posted message on Cocoontech. Its prominence, and convenience, beckons us to use it all too frequently. The consequences are grave my friends: multi-page 'monster threads' containing a few pearls of wisdom buried within endlessly repetition and bloat. We won't be calling anyone out in the congregation; you sinners know who you are and it is time to mend your ways!

Cocooners are in the habit of using the "Reply" button in order to reply to a posted message. This has the unfortunate effect of quoting the entire previous post and duplicating all text, code samples, and embedded images. This activity needlessly bloats the thread and makes it far less convenient to read. One page of usable content becomes inflated to four or more pages filled with duplicated material. Perhaps this is required for email, in order to maintain context, but it is completely optional for a bulletin board.

The "FastReply" button is quick way to reply without quoting. Alternately, one can toggle the "+Quote" button (switches to "- Quote") before clicking "Reply" in order to suppress the quoting function.

I suggest the Quoting feature's default state be disabled ("-Quote") as opposed to enabled by default. The result will be compact threads that can be read quickly and efficiently.

Go forth and be better Cocooners!

I like people quoting the exact point they are replying to and trimming out the un-needed chaff. This removes the ambiguity of "who is he talking to" in a long thread. But I agree with 123 that there are too many examples of people quoting too much, too often that results in needless scrolling.

Is Fast Reply new? My theory is sort of like Wayne said, just quoting the specific thoughts, or sometimes a whole post, but ONLY if that post is further up in the thread. I do agree that it can get annoying when the previous message in the thread is fully quoted in the very next reply. The only issue is that sometimes while you are replying and thinking you will be the next post, another one sneaks in there. In that case I usually go back and edit and add the quote to the thought I was referencing. But in general, yes, I do agree with 123 and Wayne. I'm not sure changing the default behavior of the Quote button will alter peoples behavior though.

yes, we should do this

Blessed be the comedians for their posts shall inherit all the drive space! :D

I agree that the ancient practice of "snipping a quote" (anyone recall the scissors hieroglyph? 8< ) is not used often enough. No one needs to see the whole dang message repeated when you can read the original no more than 1-3 posts above. It leads to abominations like quotations nested four or more levels deep.

Seems to me that FastReply has been around for awhile. It doesn't have all of the formatting commands found in the full Reply function but it's all you need for most replies.

I think that "- Quote" ought to be the default mode. If you need to quote, toggle to "+ Quote" and then click "Reply". The extra step ensures you only get quoted text if you ask for it. Your post isn't "super-sized" by default!

I fully agree and if i may have been quilty I vow to change my behaviour. :D
Quilty? Yes, MavRic, we're gonna have to ask you to stop being so soft, fluffy, comfortable and colorful. You're so like something someone's grandmother would make. Please stop it, for all of our sakes.

Agreed, 100%, that full quotes are annoying.

But I hope this thread doesn't discourage people from chiming in with anything that is on their minds.

'Fluff' makes the threads more...'quilty', a little less sterile.
