Web cam helps capture Florida burglars

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., April 11 (UPI) -- A Florida woman says she used a Web cam to catch two men in the act of robbing her home. Jeanne Thomas said she alerted police to two men robbing her Boynton Beach house after accessing her Web cam from her Keiser University office and seeing the criminals making themselves at home, The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported Saturday.

''It was the strangest feeling,'' Thomas, 53, said of Wednesday's incident. "I had a feeling something wasn't right. When I went on, I saw a person standing in my house.''

While watching the men gather up her family's belongings, Thomas contacted police and within minutes, 18 officers had surrounded her home and the robbers inside.

''You could see them on the video freaking out,'' said Thomas, who installed the Web cam after enduring past robberies.

"They darted around the house trying to figure out how to get out.''

Boynton Beach Police told the Post they arrested Curtis Williams and Steven Morales as the men allegedly left Thomas' home and arrested two other suspects in relation to the crime.[

Makes me want to have a motion detector contact my computer through Elk to activate the webcam and record a video. Plus, it can contact me when it happens. But if only I could affix a webcam to a wall with a velcro (without damaging a wall). It is only great when it comes to self-monitoring, though.

Update: Funny how the message editor (when starting a thread/posting a reply) takes the HTML when I copy/paste while this software does not parse the HTML code when I post.

One of the best pieces of advice electron gave me a long time ago is to have your cameras send pictures on motion detection to an internet hosting (offsite) location. This way you will still have the pictures/video in case the PC in your home gets stolen.

There are multiple ways of doing this. Axis has this capability built into their systems as well as other cheaper software alternatives such as WebCamXP.

I did not remember if I read that thread before I post (I've been using "View New Posts" link). Thanks for posting.

Somehow, I couldn't find that thread.

I remember watching this in ABC 27 HD in widescreen about a couple of days ago.

I am in China for a couple months, and saw the news heading on CNN. When I followed it, i was quite surprised to find out it was just 5 miles from my house! I talked to a friend at home yesterday, and the lady and her husband are clients of his! What a small small world indeed!!!!!

I actually have a cam set up at home, not for security for say... :) My dog just had puppies, and I have been watching them from China daily to see how they are doing.
