Weird chime and tracking origin.

Hello all,

Over the weekend, my wife and I were home and I suddenly heard a chime. Only our exit doors and some windows on ground floor are wired with chime. So I thought I might have left something, a door unlocked and the wind blew it open. But all doors were secure. It was really weird. It happened a second time, and then no more. Has anyone ever had this issue?

Our system has been up and running flawlessly for about 6 months now. This has never occurred. We have never had a false alarm either.

I tried to go on RP to figure out if there was an event log, but could not find one that detailed opening and closing of zones.

thanks.

Assuming the system was off....you're not going to see anything in the log if the system is disarmed and it's not an event.

What sort of response time do you have on the zones? Was it windy, hot/cold?

Are you sure it was the panel and not something else in the house (I've had service calls for microwaves, smoke detectors, CO's and what have you with low batteries)?

alarm was disarmed. Makes sense that it would not report.

I will need to check on the response time, but it is quick. It was normal day, 70-80 outside. There was a little wind.

I was right next to keypad when it happened. I checked my chimes on zones, and found the motion in garage on a chime, but it was armed, on separate area (garage and home on two separate partitions.)

All COs are on elk. no batteries. We will monitor and see if it happens again. It happened twice and that was it. Like I said, I had never seen that before. Maybe there is another zone on a chime. i will check again.

Thanks.

No EOLs anywhere, except at smokes or other devices that were required.

But I will check voltages. That is a good suggestion.

I had a similiar issue with a door which I wired a bit too tightly (even soldering the connections).

The door frame settled some and for whatever reason stretched the wires until they broke.

It was a PITA to find the issue and it was another PITA to fix it.

Yes, those type of problems are hard to find.  Another thing I would do is to get a multimeter and take some resistance readings by disconnecting the leads from the panel and connecting them to the meter.

Measure resistance with the contact shorted and opened (faulted and normal).

Yeah here my issue was that I put the sensor under the frame and the only way to get to it was to remove some trim.

It went from a 5 minute fix to a little project.

So, came back to this... a year later. This issues occurs on only two zones. The front door, and the rear door. front door has a surface mounted magnetic sensor. The rear has a recessed sensor. Both are same brand (I will have to look up). Have not had problems with these sensors anywhere else.

When the door is open, it will chime once in a while as if the door was closed and was just opened, even though remained wide open. Last night, I changed the sensor on the front door and it did it again once, after the swap.

The system has NEVER given false alarm on either of these doors (ie, when system is armed and doors closed, they do not open.)

Could this be bug in control? Has anyone else had this issue?

I wonder if you might have an intermittent short in the wiring to these contacts.  When the door is closed, the contact is closed and if the wiring shorts, you wouldn't know it (unless you have an EOL resistor installed).  When the door is open, the contact is open and a momentary short would make it appear as if the door closed and opened again, resulting in the extra chime.

I guess i could wire in an EOL to test this right? not bad idea. Like i said, it never tripped alarm, but if wire was pinched and shorting, it would not would it. It just seems like if there were a short, then it would not always open when you violated the zone. But that is not the case. It always seems to work.

Also weird that it would be at two doors.

Check for ground faults.

What is the response time programmed into the control?

Who is the maker of the contacts?

Are the contacts installed on a steel door?
