When does an M1 beep?

My ELK M1 is running like a Swiss watch so I've never heard it complain (i.e. beep). Does it ever beep to indicate something?

The Keypad KeyChange Update command returns, among many other things, the Beep and Chime mode settings for each Area. This does not appear to be related to an Entry/Exit's Chime mode (i.e. chime or voice) but has states where there's a Single Beep or a Continuous Beep. It suggests that the M1 can announce some sort of state by beeping. When does this happen?

From the ASCII Protocol manual:
Beep and Chime mode bit settings by area
  • Chime and beep OFF = 0x30 or ‘0’
  • Single beep = 0x31 or bit 0 is set in low nibble.
  • Constant beep = 0x32 or bit 1 is set in low nibble. This bit will only be set once and reset to 0 when the constant beep ends.
  • Chime = 0x34 or bit 4 is set in low nibble. This bit will be set and reset after transmission.

My ELK M1 also beeps at 1 min intervals on rare occasions. At first I thought it was the way I had my 4 wire RS-485 bus daisy-chained. I have since added a M1DBHR and I still have the occasional beep issue. The only other thing that I am doing that is not by the book, is the way I am powering all of my perpherials. They are all currently being powered by the ELK M1 Gold. Most of the items powered are motion detectors. I believe the beep issue occurs when too many motions are accessed at the same time causing too much current draw on the ELK. I have not tested my theory yet. However, I don't think it is a good long term strategy to consistantly attempt to overdraw power. I plan to address this issue by using a ELK-PD9 Power distribution module with a 12V 3A power supply.

Best of Luck,

Rod

Rod, when the M1 beeps, does it record anything in its log? If your theory is correct (beeps due to some sort of trouble) it probably logs the condition.

I suppose an easy way for me to introduce a touble-state is by disconnecting my siren. I'm curious to know when it "Single Beeps" vs. "Continuous Beeps".

On my issue, there is nothing in the trouble log. It just beeps at 1 min intervals until I power cycle the ELK M1 Gold, then the problem goes away. I only see the problem once every few months. Since it is so intermintent, it has not been high on my priority list to address. I won't know for a few months if the problem has gone away by addressing my suspected power issue. I will make a note to come back to this post and give an update in a few months.
