Where to terminate?

I need suggestions on where is the best place to terminate my cat5 runs. I have two patch panels that I was planning on mounting on the 19" rack and patching to the switch from there. What I am wondering is would it be better to mount the patch panels to the wall and patch from the wall to the rack. If they are mounted on the wall they could stay where they are if I ever move. However, I don't really like the idea of all the wire jumping from the wall to the rack. Seems like it would be messy. I have roughly 50 or so runs that I will be terminating so it will be a pretty big job that I don't want to do twice...

Any suggestions?

I would terminate on the wall if you plan to take the rack with you when you move. A ladder bracket suspended from the ceiling can neatly bring the patch cables out from the wall and doen to the rack. Or go down and bring the cables across at foor level into the bottom of the rack and up the front. Depends on your equipment layout.

I would terminate to the rack. It is pretty unlikely that you will take a rack with you, unless you plan to uninstall everything in your house before you move. Just my two cents.

Guess there are many opinions....

I am ofcourse new to this and have not yet done my own install. But a big consideration for me is to automate the house in such a way that most of the equipment can be removed and leave a simple to use..

My plan is to put some 19" patch panels on wall brackets. My 19" equipmen rack will be nearby and the patch cables with go between wall and rack.

Whenever i move i take the rack and wall the wall panel. Even a simple soul can figure out how to patch. Or at least for any trained profesional it should be immediatly obvious.

Two for rack and two for wall... <_< I suppose that I should stick to my original plan and just put it in the rack. One plus is that if I do put it in the rack and end up moving there will still be enough wire to move the panels to the wall. The rack is a real nice unit with wheels so I don't think that I will want to leave it if we move. Who knows...

Thanks for your help!

Albuquerque. Well, if you sell your place to a scientist from Sandia National Labs your automation and wiring might be worth it to the buyer. If you sell to folks like I recently did, they would rather I took it all with me. I had the wiring terminated on a backboard, and all the goodies were on the rack. Easy to accommodate. They wanted just cell phones and no network. Kids!
