x10 220V on/off

Newbie here...

This home automation is definitely an exciting prospect. Looking into trying x10 to see how things work and go from there.

Our dryer no longer times it cycles. The knob does not turn, set it to 15 minutes or an hour and it will stay on indefinitely. (yes a new dryer or timer may work, but might be an excuse for home automation...)

What is needed to install an x10 (or similar) module for the 220V dryer outlet that can turn power on or off to the dryer?

First I would say. I am not that confident on trusting X10 to control a heavy duty heater in a Dryer.
Glitches can happen and having the dryer go on when not expected or not off could be a problem. X10 is not 100% reliable in many installations.

That is going to have to be a heavy duty X10 switch or X10 module controlling a heavy duty contactor.
Do you know the amperage rating of the breakers or fuses on the dryers outlet or the ratings found on the dryers name plate?
Is it plugged into an outlet and three or four pins?

Get a replacement timer, it'll probably be as much work to replace that (if you do it yourself), and much safer.

My thought is, if the insurance would be able to deny you a claim, because of something you did...i.e. made it so the Dryer (high risk for fire) could run, even though it's broken...if your house burns down...I'm thinking you are SOL.

I do not generally trust X10 (or almost any other automation protocol) for something as important as what you are describing...

So, I wouldn't do what you are trying to do...

I would do as suggested and fix the dryer properly and then there are threads here about monitoring the dryer, so you know cycles are completed which you can use as your excuse to get into HA. Safety first.
