Premise Remote Web Access using a Blackjack Phone

Just picked up a Samsung (AT&T) Blackjack (1) phone and thought I would us it to access my Premise server remotely. I setup a webuser name and password of test / test, and then on my phone typed in an URL of http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xxxx/ppc hit go and was asked for a user name and password. On the phone I typed in test for the user name, and test for the password hit enter and was told the name / password was incorrect. On the server I verified the name and password, and tried again. Same results. I then created a new webuser using a name / password of 1234 / 1234 and tried to connect again from my phone. Same results. I then tried using the SSL connection and again was denied access to the server.

I then changed the authentication level to NEVER and tried to connect again. Woo hoo it worked! Having verified that the server was operating correctly and that I had setup the firewall correctly for both HTTP & HTTPS connections I went back to a authentication level of INTERNET and tried again using the 1234 account. This time I wasn't prompted for a user name or password it simply said that I had been denied access. The exact error is this:

You are unauthorized to access this page
If you are the owner of this web site and believe this to be in error
check the security settings on the web site or add a valid user account

No matter what I do now I am no longer prompted for a user name / password. I went ahead and cleared the cache, cookies and history on my phone to be safe and tried again. Same results.

As long as I have the authentication level set at NEVER it works great, however changing this to INTERNET or above and I'm SOL.

Hints gladly taken.

I performed a few test using my PC's IE7 browser and my results differ from yours.

I created a user called Guest and assigned a password. In all test cases, the Secure Web Site server's Authenticate property is set to INTERNET.

http://localhost
I get the standard Premise Browser interface plus a prompt to "Click on a user to login". Guest is listed and if I click it, a keyboard is displayed in the browser.

http://localhost/ppc
I get the PPC Browser interface and no prompt to login.

https://localhost/ppc
IE7 warns me the certificate was not issued by a trusted source, I continue, and then get the PPC Browser interface with no prompt to login.

Not sure why the results aren't the same as yours other than it may have something to do with the phone's browser? <_<

Thanks 123 for the fast response. Ya on local comps I get the same results as you. Using Windows Mobile 6 I'm not having much luck. I'll keep poking at it. Maybe I'll figure out whats wrong.

So as it turns out using a security level of Internet confuses WinCE6 on the Blackjack completely. However if you instead use a security level of Subnet it works as it should. The downside is that you will be prompted for a user name and password on your local subnet with this setting. My thoughts are that since it is possible to run more than one Premise server on the same box, I may run one instance for external access and one for internal. Since I am limited to pocket PC mode on the Blackjack it would make sense to change the interface anyway.
Hope this helps someone else trying to access their Premise sever from their smartphone.
