Maybe I'm missing something... is there a reason that you can't use the XEP with Gmail with the SSL/TLS settings that satisfy the requirements for both? 

      I agree with both.... but neither address SmartThings integration.  I personally never really valued SmartThings personally, as I utilized the Elk Zwave module for integration for lighting and deadbolts. However, I believe SmartThings adds things like Hue integration, Alexa, etc. so...

You mention the open source project, Konnected... and stated that it "allows you to essentially control and/or monitor relay closures and access all that within the smarthings app."    So are you planning to purchase the Konnected DIO device with the intent that you will connect the various I/O...

  This is where I was heading with my initial question... changing the upstairs device to a network switch would greatly simplify things. Even if it is a "router" by hardware category. It would be easy to disable the DHCP server on it, set a static address on it that adds it to the first floor...

You have (2) separate cable modems (2 devices that have a coaxial connection), or is one of those a router?

I used the TZ45 (from RCS) for a while without any issues. 

  Also understand that the P212S is enrolled as a keypad. So you may get keypad trouble notifications from it as well, which you could then write rules for...  WHENEVER Keypad 3 trouble.... etc.
