I too have been curious of the age demographic here for a while. For a long time I assumed that I was on the younger end of the spectrum, but not so sure anymore. I'm mid-30s now. Looking back at my profile history, I see that I joined the site back in 2009 [late 20s then], a year after we...
I just took a few minutes to read the article. It states that in the article: "...Bhargava (who asked to be identified only by his first and middle names)... "
There are definitely some impressive integration pieces mentioned in the article; uber wait times, battery % levels, fuel levels...
I never bothered with trying to get any detail out of the email message. Once I got a text stating my alarm had been activated, I would log directly into a) the Elk app and/or b) my camera system.
My camera system was configured to send me MMS messages as soon as anyone was at my front door, so...
I feel like I had a pretty reasonable HA setup in our last house (sold ~18mo ago). The only thing we really left were the in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. I pulled my Elk, keypads, and everything associated with that except the door/window sensors. I also pulled our 4 exterior cameras, zwave...
I've been in some commercial spaces where I've seen 4" conduit sealed with a fire putty; apparently named intumescent putty according to the link wuench shared above. Literally, exactly like shown in many photos on that page where the cable simply passes though the conduit w/o termination... ...
Maybe I'm missing something... is there a reason that you can't use the XEP with Gmail with the SSL/TLS settings that satisfy the requirements for both?

I personally never really valued SmartThings personally, as I utilized the Elk Zwave module for integration for lighting and deadbolts. However, I believe SmartThings adds things like Hue integration, Alexa, etc. so...
You mention the open source project, Konnected... and stated that it "allows you to essentially control and/or monitor relay closures and access all that within the smarthings app."
So are you planning to purchase the Konnected DIO device with the intent that you will connect the various I/O...
This is where I was heading with my initial question... changing the upstairs device to a network switch would greatly simplify things.
Even if it is a "router" by hardware category. It would be easy to disable the DHCP server on it, set a static address on it that adds it to the first floor...
So, I never setup Rules in Elk based on temperature, so I'm not 100% certain that Elk was getting that information. However, I used the eKeypad app which provided an interface to the thermostat via the Elk Zwave integration... and the temperature was always displayed correctly there... and I...
Also understand that the P212S is enrolled as a keypad. So you may get keypad trouble notifications from it as well, which you could then write rules for... WHENEVER Keypad 3 trouble.... etc.
