Since retiring I have been doing home automation, starting with the Home Theater I built.  All of the AV equipment, lights, AC etc are automated.  I have extended the automation throughout the house.  I have a central VM running on my NAS that controls everything.  All of the remotes in the house talk to the control system, it interprets requests and issues the correct command depending on room and equipment, lights, fans, AC, ...

I am now going after my pool equipment.

The remotes currently consist of TSU9600s and a windows tablet.  My control software is written in VB.net.

Although not a computer programmer by trade, I have been writing software since the 70's and got into writing automation software for laboratories where I worked (did all that on my own time).
