I would give #2 a try.  You cannot break anything trying.
 
The issue of a broadcast storm will still affect the backplane of the switch and switch CPU even though you are using a VLAN.

SO.... I have reconnected the devices per #2.  Everything seems stable but somewhere along the way my internet speed has been capped at just below 100Mbps averaging about 95-96.  This is in contrast to almost 325Mbps download speed available prior.  Any ideas what I may have done?
