Help needed for choosing correct HA controller

Which HA system to choose.  Not an easy answer.  I have Insteon with ISY 994i and ELK M1G in my present house which I am in the process of selling.  Both ELK and ISY have worked well.  However, I decided to go with zwave in my new house because of a broader selection of devices.  Specifically...

Identifying Which Smoke Triggered The Alarm

I heavily use the standard ELK speaker for many announcements including system messages, window and door violations, tasks that announce door closings, garage door status.  generator exercise on and off, water valve status, etc  I also use extensive email messages for other alerts such as low...

Identifying Which Smoke Triggered The Alarm

Thanks.  I think I understand it now.  I will reprogram and test.   Regarding the siren, I use a 3 channel ELK voice driver card that provides a loud voice messages for CO, Burglary, or Fire.  It does include a temporal siren and alternates between repeating the loud voice message and the...

Identifying Which Smoke Triggered The Alarm

I should have mentioned that I am using 4w units with built in sounders.  I use a booming voice driver card to also announce the fire condition but do not use a panel driven alarm bell.    I am trying to figure out a way to shut off all the smoke sounders except the one that triggered in the...

If I drop out the reversing relay but not reset the SAUX output will that drop all the other but leave the original one that triggered on?

Identifying Which Smoke Triggered The Alarm

A number of years back, I had an HAI Omni 2 that I replaced with the ELK M1G because of the modular expansion and easy to use rules support that the ELK offered. The ELK has worked fine for me but I do miss one capability that the Omni 2 provided regarding managing the smoke detectors.    I have...

Elk M1KP blows out due to static electricity build up when panel touched

I have had the same issue.  It blew out one keypad completely, on another static destroyed one of the sections of the LCD screen.  I tried grounding and if anything it makes it worse because it provides a better path for the static charge.  An antistatic mat under the thermostat seems to work...

Elk RP2 will not connect to M1G

I got this error message.  I bypass the XEP and connect my Win 10 PC with ELKRP directly to the serial port using a USB to serial converter.  5.3.8 immediately installed the system returned to normal operation.

Any experience here with ISY - Z-Wave?

I just ordered an ISY with Z Wave.  I spent quite a bit of time researching it and they are still early in the game with ZWave but are working diligently on it.  I looked at Homeseer and ISY and I went with ISY because I want to use the ELK as main automation controller so I can use the ELK...

    Z Wave Motion Detectors

An easy way to automate night lights is to use a dimmable smart switch that can be operated both manually and by automation.  Put dimmable bulbs in the light fixture and then the automation can set it to whatever level of brightness you desire.  I now do this with a bath fan light and it works...

    Z Wave Motion Detectors

Currently, in my present house, I use separate motion detectors for security vs. lighting automation.  The security ones are dual technology and are set to be less sensitive to avoid false triggers and they are all wired detectors.  The lighting one are wireless and use them to automatically...

    Z Wave Motion Detectors

I appreciate all the thoughts.  Regarding the question of why not go with ELK, first, I like what they are doing but their wireless is their own standard and as such, they currently and will have for some time a limited choice of devices and I use the ELK for many things and need broad device...

    Z Wave Motion Detectors

I plan to use the Leviton secondary controller which supports beaming encryption used by the locks.  The ELK interface is basically a RS485 to RS232 converter that interfaces the ELK M1G controller to the Leviton  Z Wave controller.  I will also use the Leviton USB Stick for primary controller...

Elk M1 Gold - How Many Expanders, Power Supplies, etc. Do I Need?

You have several considerations to deal with.  They include: 1. Power 2. The number of 16 port zone expanders you will need. 3. The number of RS485 bus loads.  The base ELK supports 4, you will need a bus expander to add more than 4 devices and each keypad counts as do the zone expander cards...

    Z Wave Motion Detectors

Thanks Al, I will have a look at Everspring.  I have looked at Ecolink, Aeotec, Fibaro, Schlage, GoControl, SmartThings, Philio, Enerwave, GE, 2Gig, Honeywell, Monoprice, Vera, etc.  I am sure I missed some in this list.  Many of the suppliers seem to be private labeling units made by other...
