    Typical burglar?

I had my incoming phone lines buried and the NID placed in my basement when my house was built. Just slid the boys a few $$. Worked well until they installed FIOS. Unfortunately when you get FIOS, they move any phone lines on existing copper to the FIOS NID. I could not talk them out of it...

    monitoring temperature of Elk can

FYI. most of the inexpensive desktop switches use passive cooling and should be fine in the can. At work, we place them in the legs of conference tables along with power supplies for the confernce phone. No air flow at all and no problem with them. At least with the netgear ones we use.

    Monitoring worth it??

I just did the same thing. Replaced my ADT Ademco and went with an Elk and Nextalarm. My reasons for staying with monitoring. Discount. At $18/month, I get a nice discount on my home owners insurance, and they pretty much pay for it. Fire. Have all my builder installed alarms tied to it and...

    Electric Strike

I would like to have an electric strike for the mud room entry from my garage. I plan on having a proxy sensor out there connected to a MG KP and it would disarm and unlock the door. I am thinking of the Triune 3234W strike. So I am guessing I need 12v power to it and maybe a relay. But how...

    Prox Sensor and Unlock Door

ok. now I understand better. If I take away "arm" then I could have the behavior I want and add a few rules for the garage entry. The fob could then still default to normal behavior and disarm if presented to any KP. That is helpful. I will now start specing out the lock and relay. Thank...

    Prox Sensor and Unlock Door

For me, it behaves differently. Without any rules, if a fob is presented to the KP, it either arms or disarms it. Just depends on the state its in. This is with the built-in Elk Prox sensor. So seeing how this behaves, if the door is closed and system not armed, then a presented fob will arm...

    Prox Sensor and Unlock Door

Hello Elk Users. From my Garage I have a entry into a small mud room. I want to put a keypad in the mud room and mount a Elk external prox sensor in the garage. They share a common wall so I think that will be easy. I also will put an electronic lock and I am thinking of the following...

    Wireway in cans

I have several Leviton and one Elk can. I simply drill out a small pilot hole and use self taping screws. I keep a few different sizes in a bin and grab the necessary size. This weekend I placed my Verizon POT NID and FIOS NIC in a Leviton 42. Centered and mounted everything. Also ran a...

    Elk RP Code

I must be a dolt as I can not figure out how to change the RP code in the panel? Can anyone set me in the right direction? Thx, T.

    Existing Smoke Alarms

I agree. I think it would be hard. So I am not worried about that anymore. I will get the warning from the Elk's speakers. I have decided to place a speaker on each level. So three speakers yapping at us should do the trick.

    Existing Smoke Alarms

OK. Starting to figure this out. I was a little confused as the original builder installed unit in my basement has a transformer on it + a 14/2 into it and one 14/2 out and one 14/3 out. On the transformer was two brown wires and I had no idea where that went. It finally dawned on me that...

    Existing Smoke Alarms

When my house was built, the builder installed regular 110v w/battery BU smokes and they are tethered together. There are 8 of them. My original Ademco alarm included another smoke and they put it in the 2nd floor common hallway at the top of the stairs and its right next to one of the...

    New INSTEON Products from Smarthome

The DW100 is very cool. If it had a low-volt relay in it for its on-off state, then it could be very useful.

    ELK-M1KPB Temp Sensor

Anyone have any issues with the built in temp sensor? The one on my 1st floor reads 85 and the thermostat next to it reads 75. The one on the 2nd floor reads 80. I know the 2nd floor is hotter than the 1st. The 1st has a prox reader on it. 2nd does not. When I installed the one on the...
