Replacing POTS monitoring for CADDX with cell

It's been working fine - no issues. I used longer wires between it and the panel to get the Alula higher - guessing it's about 30' and didn't have any issues with that either. They have a cell connection to the Alula so not sure if they configure it or it auto detects. They had me put in a...

    Need VPN for foreign travel

I don't really want to route all my traffic through the home network but I suppose I could - it would probably slow things down so didn't plan on doing that. Currently When I am connected to the home VPN the home traffic goes to the home network and the other internet traffic goes directly to...

    Need VPN for foreign travel

I have a trip to China and want to set up a VPN for my phone. I have openVPN set up for access to my home network - a server in the cloud and a client on the phone and a client on my pfsense router. I could just buy a vpn solution but wondering if I can tweak my openVPN set up to route...

Improving streaming stick performance and eliminating buffering

It's still working fine. I don't have IPv6 on my local network so that isn't an issue. I think the main thing was many other devices on 2.4 GHz band.

Phone use in foreign countries. Get by with just wifi calling?

Got a Digi SIM for one of our phones. Two cell companies there, Digi and Smart, both owned by the same company but really still independent. I went with Digi as I had read they are the more common although both are big. Even though the country speaks English the details of their various plans...

Improving streaming stick performance and eliminating buffering

Probably should give it a few more days to know for sure but so far no buffering with just the change to the 5GHz band wifi. :)

Improving streaming stick performance and eliminating buffering

Have a couple Roku streaming stick and having trouble with buffering messages appearing. The roku network test shows signal strength and speed but doesn't show more detail such as latency or jitter. I am not sure if the issue is in my local network or my ISP but guessing they are local. I...

    GE/Interlogix/CADDX NX-8E

Mind giving a basic overview of your system? What are the boards in your house panel and zones? What zones planned for the garage (fire, doors, motion, etc). Just looking for how many zones are used and how many are available on the panel. The NX320 will power the keypad but doesn't give...

    GE/Interlogix/CADDX NX-8E

Best way IMHO is to do an expansion board (forget the number - I can look it up) in the garage and hook any door sensors and smokes to that. I suppose you could run all the sensors to the main panel if you have extra zones there.

    GE/Interlogix/CADDX NX-8E

It's pretty straight forward although I think some aspects weren't entirely clear in the documentation. I installed CAT 5 cable and doubled up the wires using each pair as a single conductor. Put surge protectors at each end of the run between buildings. What specific questions do you have...

Phone use in foreign countries. Get by with just wifi calling?

Planning a trip to Belize and wondering about cell coverage/use. My phone is from Cricket and unlocked - Samsung A32. Have wifi calling. Downloaded google map of the area. Thinking I may not really need to get a local SIM card. I am guessing I will have access to wifi to check in from time...

Minimum size conduit for optical fiber?

I was looking at some old threads and figured I would post what I did on this. I ended up using 4 strand (2 pair) version of this: https://www.fs.com/products/70220.html with pulling eyes. Pulled it into the 1" conduit with no issues being careful not to kink the fiber. I had install large...

Motion light put in constant on mode by utility power glitch

Had a brief power drop at home and some of my outdoor motion lights got stuck on. I hadn't thought about this before but many motion sensor lights have a way to keep them on by switching off the power briefly and then back on. Seems like this would happen more often as we occasionally get a...

    SMS gateway for Cricket wireless?

I can understand the issue of abuse but I like to send texts for notifications from some of my stuff because I see texts faster than emails. Emails sometimes take a while. Maybe I should get a new email provider - that's a different discussion...
