CES 2011 Exclusive Update - Aeon Labs

CocoonTech visited the Aeon Labs booth at CES 2011 to report on their new products.

Aeon Labs has a LOT of really cool Z-Wave hardware for the DIY automation enthusiast!  They actually state up front that they are DIY friendly!

Their first displayed product is a ZWave Smart Energy Switch ('in-line' plug) that will also monitor the devices energy (wattage and kilowatt hours).  Systems such as MiCasaVerde and HomeSeer already have software interfaces for the energy monitoring capability of these devices!

Their next displayed product is a Whole Home Energy Meter that will measure the entire home's energy.  It includes typical current donuts that get mounted over the main two (wired) phases of a typical home, along with a ZWave transmitter inside your breaker box.  The transmitter is USB powered, but their an AC to USB powered interface is available to the unit can be powered off of a 120 volt source (from the breaker box).  Also, some software interfaces such as HomeSeer and MiCasaVerde can incorporate the voltage readings from the Smart Energy Switch above and include that value with the current measured with this device in order to give a more accurate wattage/energy usage for your home!

The next featured product is their Minimoat remote control.  This device can register, include, remove, and manage all of  your Z-Wave devices without the need for any additional hardware or software system!  They are also coming out with a small keyfob version as well.  The four buttons of the keyfob can be selected to emulate either the top buttons or bottom buttons of the Minimoat device.  These remotes could also be used to 'trigger' events in home automation software such as HomeSeer as well.

Aeon Labs also has a Z-Stick which to me, has very similar looks and feature as HomeSeer's Z-Troller.  You just bring the Z-Stick to your ZWave devices around your home to include them, then plug it into your USB input on your automation computer and your entire ZWave topology is available for that system!

Another really cool product displayed by Aeon Labs is their Multi Sensor, which is a four in one motion detector.  This device will not only detect motion but will also measure temperature, humidity, and room light (lux) levels as well!  It can be mounted on a wall and aimed for a desired directional view, or mounted on the ceiling for 360 degree room motion monitoring.

What product suite would be complete without a typical magnetic door/window sensor that is ZWave compatible! This unit is powered via a CR2 camera battery and will tell you when that battery is getting low.

One important announcement that Aeon Labs was touting at this year's CES was that they are coming out with a dry contact monitor capable unit that will transmit a ZWave signal on the closing or opening of a connected dry contact (contact closure) device.  This means no more hacking a DS10a for our custom applications (plus the DS10a isn't ZWave compatible).  Aeon Labs really does cater to the DIY home automation type!  :)

A future flagship product Aeon Labs is coming out with is the Micro Smart Energy Switch (MICROS).  This product, meant to me mounted in your switch gang box, will make your currently non automated regular light switch into a ZWave compatible switch AND have the same energy monitoring capabilities as the Smart Energy Switch described above (how cool is that)

It is currently going through UL listing requirements and should retail for under $50.  They will also modify the above pictured unit (which shows contact inputs) and eliminate those contacts and instead, provide leads, which will make the unit thinner (my thumb is covering the size of the piece that should be eliminated below).  This will make it a lot easier to install in your current home's gang boxes.  Also, Aeon recommends installing the unit in plastic vs. metal boxes.

Aeon Labs also plans on coming out with a 220 volt ZWave smart energy switch (that will also monitor power) some time in the near future.

Additional information on all of Aeon Lab's ZWave devices can be obtained on Aeon Labs website.
