[Articles] Google purchases SageTV

Tell Dean to go borrow a cup of sugar from his neighbor, and ask what the SageTV plan is while he's there.

I really should get the Chatmosphere IRC client, Dan. ;)

My initial thoughts concerning the purchase were absolutely negative, as shown in my posts above. However, something I thought about yesterday on my way to work... Google has shown interest in the HA market (a la Android@Home), and this adds another feather in their cap to integrate and possibly produce a great HA solution if that is indeed their ultimate goal.

As with any powerful, yet small-group nature'd product, the user group behind Sage definitely added benefit to the overall experience. I could only wish that this doesn't go away, and somehow they embraced the community for input. However, with such a large corporation making the purchase, it seems inevitable that everything will be brought in-house and there will be little, if any, further development as had been done in the past.

As mentioned above, CQC is another program that is in this niche market and 'feels' very similar as far as user community, etc. I know Dean has been through some struggles this year with CQC, but could only think of a pipe-dream-type world, where Google put together a single integrated system that really capitalized on all of the technologies out there and to tie all of them together in an elegant manner. If this were even a possibility, I think it would take a lot of work to really map everything out, and Google would certainly need the assistance of those who have been leading the efforts to make it happen, and this may be where they are going (??).

Other than the above mentioned concerns, I also worry that Google is going to frown upon home based servers and try to move everything to their cloud. Until ISP data rates are drastically increased, I personally dont think it's a viable solution. Yes, it's close, but if they did support ripping if your own movies, the time it would take to upload 6-7GB (DVD) or 25GB+ for a BluRay would be ridiculous. The only way I see that working is if 'Hollywood' got involved and allowed a better solution; such as possibly having all of the movies already on the cloud, and you purchase the 'license' to access is.

LOTS and LOTS of speculation for now, but I'm semi-excited to see what they are able to put together, while hoping they dont kill Sage as others believe may very well happen.

This is what we say at work when we have (yet another) re-organization:

"I've been through a lot of re-orgs...never had a good one!!"

Seems to me sage is a perfect fit for google to turn googletv into a full fledged media center with app store. Especially since sagetv now has what essentially is an app store built in with the plug in functionality and both are based on java.

My life may not be so bad, i think the seller dude has agreed to sell me everything (2 HD300, server, wifi dongle) for $450 shipped. IE, no premium. Even if this is a "dying/dead" platform, this will buy me at least 24 months for the GTV stuff to stabilize. That suits me fine, the early adopter stuff was killing me. (IE, still got way too many Intermatic zWave non-active-notification switches, too cheap to replace them as they work just fine).

Here's hoping he didn't just take my $$. Doubt it, but used paypal backed with my discover just in case.

Mr. Electron Man, please look at http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56186 and see if you'd be willing to set up a forum for banned sagetv.com topics (basically buying/selling stuff). It would be a nice first step in case other stuff also gets banned from SageTV.com.

I'd PM you on this, but apparently you've gotten so popular we need subscriptions to do PMs :-)

Someone else was asking me why you couldn't receive PM's, it's not something I did (needing a sub for PM's is crazy!). I thought maybe you were blocking them. If you didn't, I'll take a closer look at your account.

As for SageTV, anyone is welcome to post here, as long as it doesn't involve copyright/piracy issues, since that would expose CT to a potential lawsuit.

I am glad that sage is keeping the forums opeh but they dont allow any selling hardware talk.. even deleting PMs between people looking to buy/sell. So there is certainly an opportunity to have a sub-forum for sage.. it seems like there will be lots of jockeying over next few weeks as people sell their extenders or try to get that last extender they need to weather things..

(I am a buyer if anyone is selling?)

Nope. I have an icon that shows 2 waiting, but can't read them. I can email you my password if you want to log in as me to check it out. (or jump into the chat, if I can find it again).

I have no problems with selling hardware, I was under the impression they wanted to trade serial numbers. If there is a demand for uncensored access, and enough people are interested, I can set up a SageTV subforum for sure.

You should be all set. I reset your account (a bug in the last forum software upgrade screwed up a few permissions), sorry about that.

Just saw the post on SageTV forums as well, that's pretty good news considering how many people were stuck with a v7 trial on top of an existing v6 install. I purchased the upgrade, but actually went back to v6 since my wife was so used to the stock interface.

Dan, I believe you can run SageTV v7 but run the old STV on your client or extender. That way you get the backend improvements, but still keep the old UI.

There were a couple of other reasons (bugs I am sure which have been resolved by now), but that is a good idea for sure, will have to give that a try.
