I have been using the popular AverMedia NV5000 PC based DVR system for a few years now. While it works great, and the software is very powerful, it requires a dedicated PC, which has several disadvantages, such as maintenance, potential stability problems and energy cost.

I have been looking around for an affordable H.264 (which provides much better compression and quality) DVR appliance for a while now, and finally decided on ordering the Vitek VT-H40 DVR since Automated Outlet (a CTVA member), is running a sale on them this month. Read more for a detailed review and many pictures of the system in action.

Great review!

One think I would like to do is automatic offsite backups of recent video. Is the unit capable of this via ftp or some other way? Or do backups require a manual process?

Johnny

It's a manual process. Maybe the client can be automated somewhat with something like 'Auto It', but it's probably one of those features only higher end DVR systems have.

Anybody else get one of these and/or have an opinion? Dan, do you still like it and plan on retiring your AverMedia card?

The AverMedia card is still in the PC, but I am no longer using it. The AverMedia software is very powerful, and while I miss that flexibility, I needed to focus on reliability. While it would be nice if the DVR had a few more features, it does the job. I really like the fact that this is a stand alone device, no more worries about something not working right, or overloading the CPU. I have used it several times already to go back in time and catch various stuff like the mailman throwing my boxes with electronics on my driveway instead of getting out of the car and delivering it to the door.
