Automatic Website Backups?

Dan,

What steps are you taking to make sure you don't have a repeat of the CocoonTech Disaster Crash a few years back? I'm running a website now and feel that I should be backing it up more frequently. Is there a tool or service you are using to back things up nightly?

While I can't divulge most of the details (security reasons), one of the many processes in place involves doing nightly offsite backups of all data. I wrote my own backup software because I didn't like anything that's out there. I might release it to the public once I clean it up (was always the plan). However, the most important step was to switch to a competent host (which HostPC was not), that alone will help a lot.

I use Acronis True Image to make a complete drive image each night as well as a backup of my web sites. I keep 15 copies of each. These are stored on a 1 TB external drive as well as an internal drive. The drive backup takes about 3 hours so I start it at 2 AM. The copy over to external drive takes about 20 minutes. I love Acronis as it has saved me many times. I also use Acronis at home nightly on my PC's. It works excellent for the kids laptops. If they get a virus or other type of infection I simply restore the image and we are back in business.

Acronis can image from a remote location? ftp?

I host my own web sites at Home and at work so I can load Acronis on all web servers. Any reputable web hosting service will backup web sites nightly and offer off site storage for customers.
