Backup battery--can it be laid on its side?

Is there any reason I should not mount a battery on its side? Does the liquid level relative to the cells need the battery oriented upright for proper long term operation?

The battery is an elk EL1280 12V 8Ah if that matters.

Take a look at this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_battery

" Unlike a traditional wet-cell lead-acid battery, these batteries do not need to be kept upright (though they cannot be charged inverted). "

These batteries are also refered to as "Valve Regulated" which refers to a valve that can vent gas in certain charging conditions. I don't understand all I know about these batteries, but I'm not convinced they won't burp some acid if they vent gas as designed if not right-side-up. If I decide to use one other than in my basement, I may place it in a marine battery box. Probably not necessary, but they can be had for cheap.

Bottom line, should work on its side.

The ELK battery uses absorbent material between the plates to hold the electrolye. Laying them on their side does not cause any problems.
