Is there any reason I should not mount a battery on its side? Does the liquid level relative to the cells need the battery oriented upright for proper long term operation?
The battery is an elk EL1280 12V 8Ah if that matters.
" Unlike a traditional wet-cell lead-acid battery, these batteries do not need to be kept upright (though they cannot be charged inverted). "
These batteries are also refered to as "Valve Regulated" which refers to a valve that can vent gas in certain charging conditions. I don't understand all I know about these batteries, but I'm not convinced they won't burp some acid if they vent gas as designed if not right-side-up. If I decide to use one other than in my basement, I may place it in a marine battery box. Probably not necessary, but they can be had for cheap.
Thanks guys, very helpful.
My only real alternative, where I could put it upright, would have been to put in in the attic a few feet above the stuff I'm providing the backup for. 120 degree attics in the summer here in the SW desert is probably not uncommon.
