Backyard security

Or in south America, they just put up electric fences at the top of walls... 10,000 volt pulses or something. I think if you cut them, it triggers alarm too..

I use indoor Bosch blue line series outside with dual PIR and microwave. They are under the eaves, and I sealed them with silicone caulk after dropping a fresh silica gel packet in each one. They've worked great for at least 3 or 4 years.

I put them in their own area and just speak a voice announcement when they are tripped. Low number of false positives.

OMG W2P, I mainly use tapatalk so i didn't see your post earlier. All things considered... thats what I want! I think I'll just sit on my patio with a gin and tonic and a paintball gun and just have at it.
Luckily our area has almost no crime - but punk kids can be the worst at times (one of my neighbor kids was arrested for breaking into a home last year) - I like having an alert on the gate for opening - haven't worried much about fence jumping as it hasn't happened and my neighbors keep their gates locked - but I do like the DVR motion detection option.

I've been here 6 years and got broken into 2 times. Once they busted the window of my car and took my work briefcase. The other time the car was left unlocked and they got the garage opener. Opened my garage and had at it. Took all my tools and my golf clubs.

That is crappy... that's why 1) I've never kept garage door openers in my cars - instead I keep them on the keychain or use my phone (had clifford alarms for the longest time so I used their garage door interface to make a button on the car's remote open the garage); and 2) now I keep the cars inside the garage.  I got tired of always worrying what was left in the car that someone might go after.

The cars seem to be a thing in the area - my neighbor leaves his pickup outside and a couple times people have messed with stuff in the bed - and just a couple weeks ago my neighbor on the other side had his car ransacked (he left it unlocked).  As soon as the Ubiquiti AirVision Pro cameras are released I plan to add a few more around the outside of the house so I can see what really goes on at night.

I wish more people would do this (especially the ones that say crime never happens around their neighborhood).  You WILL be surprised! ;)

Though you need to have a lot of time to sit through reviewing all that footage...

Not true if you do it right! ;)

I use WebCamXP along with Vitamin D to view my cameras.  WebCamXP provides a nice thumbnail image for each capture on motion which can then be brought up on their internal webserver.  It takes me about two minutes each morning to review all the captures that happened that prior evening.

If I see something that warrants further investigation, I look at the time of the capture, then go to the video recording via the Vitamin D software.

I'm also testing iSpy and they have a nice thumbnail capture display below their realtime streams that you can then click on to view the corresponding video (I'm starting to like this software as a Vitamin D replacement).

Below is an example of the thumbnail captures displayed via the WebCamXP software.

The thumbnail option is pretty handy.

Personally, I have Vitamin D e-mail me whenever there is motion, so I can review events no matter where I am (via my phone, logmein, etc.).

I have both analog cams, and a few IP HD cams in select spots to get more details, so I'm covered :)

After posting, I checked and found that Ubiquiti is another year out on the AirCam pro - so I'll probably pick up a Costco 8-camera pack before long instead of waiting; now to see where that fits on the honey-do list...

Here we have had some bit of ice storms and chilling weather (10 F) and some 40 MPH wind speed peaks yesterday.  The two Aircam weathercams outside have done well so far.  This past summer we did have a storm with some 70 MPH winds.  The generic IP camera got trashed but it still worked after drying it out (even after a rabbit chewed up the cat5e  - scorch marks where the rabbit bit thru the cable).  The winds did do some damage on the deck.  The Aircam did not get wet inside nor was it damaged in any way that I could tell.

These are stills/frames from "alarm" events.  The number of frames depend on the length of the event and how it is configured.  Some events/videos are maybe 3 seconds long while others are minutes long; depending on the triggers.

Each event becomes a video snippet of sorts.  At then end of the day I have a little script compiling an entire days worth of snippets creating one video per camera per day.  Been playing around some with the feeds though.  I have 8 analog and 8 IP plus now 3 HD feeds from 3 IP cams (playing with the dual feeds); so its really 19 feeds from my DVR box. (really just goofing around with this stuff trying to break the box).

The Aircams have plastic covers on the lens.  I do see a bit of distoration as I have been playing around with different lens and while
some of it is due to the plastic cover I think most of it is due to the lens itself.

Its just a weathercamera though and I am only playing with it.

Those are some great looking stills. I need to bite the bullet and get some better cameras. Too bad that you always get what you pay for when it comes to security cameras. $$$

IMO, the AirCams are the exception here.  Less than $100, and superior quality.
