Any time you repurpose electrical wiring you should use some colored electrical tape to "re code" the wire. If you use a white for switched hot, put black tape on it - if you turn a white into a traveller, use some red tape... it's just safer all around and lets anyone who works in that box know something is different - and it's required for code in many places.
That said, there's nothing wrong with doing it - I've had to in a couple areas... my last house had a lot of "end of run" switches so I had to repurpose them just as described.
