Best Practice - CAI controlled Sprinkler

I know there have been several topics on scheduled events including running sprinklers, spa's, etc.
 
I'm asking for some feedback on those who have used our beloved Webcontrol to operate a lawn sprinkler system, what additional inputs they have used and how it's worked. 

i'm particularly interested in external inputs used to modify the schedule, and code examples with best practices.

what do you mean? like soil moisture sensor,light sensor,water valve shout off....etc

It would be nice to based on amount of rain and soil condition to determine the length of watering.
There is a project posted in this sub-forum for greenhouse project, which I believe having some sprinkler control code in it.
