Is it possible to use a CM19a or CM17a with Premise, or do I have to buy only the obsolete CM11a to control X10 lighting?

Welcome to the Premise Home Control forum!

You'll have to use the 'obsolete' CM11A. Premise's CM11A driver is quite complete and extremely stable (as is Premise in general). I've used it for over a year without any major issues. In addition, it is an inexpensive device that can be purchased second-hand for very little money. There may be Cocooners here who have one lying around in their toolbox, gathering dust, and would be willing to part with it for a few bucks.

Thanks for the news... I think they still have new ones on ebay for $18 or so. I don't have any x10 stuff, so I'm thinking I'll order a large ebay lot. $18 isn't bad to pay for useful software like Premise after all ;-)

Food for thought:

Be aware that X10 may be inexpensive but it is an old and fragile technology. I run about 18 X10 devices and reliability is just (ahem) 'adequate'. It is a 'grin and bear' technology ... you live with its failings by virtue of its low cost (keep telling yourself that and eventually you'll believe it).

Any mid priced alternatives that work well with Premise? I'm pretty much starting from scratch as I don't have any x10 stuff yet. I'd prefere using a usb controller for lighting instead of the CM11a anyways as my HTPC has no serial port :-(

I'm already going to have to use one usb to serial adapter for TV control...

Thanks again

If memory serves me correctly, there's a Premise driver for the Smarthome X10 1132CU Powerlinc controller (a USB-based device). I wouldn't bother with it because it costs about what a modern UPB or Insteon controller does plus the old Premise support forum had a few complaints about its reliability and performance.

I recommend you get a multi-port serial card for your PC (assuming it has available slots). You'll run into many more HA devices that use serial ports. There are also USB to multi-port serial devices but they are expensive (I bought a used Edgeport/8 on on eBay). BTW, if you connect a serial-to-ethernet adapter to your TV set's serial port, Premise can access it via your LAN. Lantronix makes such devices and the Global Cache GC-100 also performs the same function.

Insteon is less expensive than UPB. However, there are several threads here attesting to Insteon's good graces and its many evils. I've opted to go UPB simply because most users have positive comments about its performance, the build-quality of UPB devices, and Premise has a UPB driver. Zwave is another favorite lighting-control technology but there's no zwave driver for Premise and zwave comes with its own set of issues (inter-operability among manufacturers for one).
