Well, going on several days now with 90% of the original system back up and operating, and no freezes....I'd have to say I'm done tinkering.
The last step was adding back in the 2 IDE drives. So now, all of the original drives are a part of the system, and there have been no freezes. Now, it is still possible that maybe one of the drives has a bad sector area or such, and perhaps the data storage on the system hasn't quite gotten to that area yet....so it may yet return. However, I believe any freezes from this point on would *have* to be the disks. Nothing else has or will change.
Looking back, the two most likely culprits then would be some sort of software I had installed (which when I did my complete reinstall the first time, I believe I eliminated that possibility), or much more likely my syba PCI-4S RS232 add-in card. There was the occassional error message in the event viewer about this card, and a few other complaints about it on the web....mainly in regards to WHS. It *did* have server 2003 drivers, but perhaps not quite good enough.
I've since moved the card to my kitchen PC, which is also on 24.7, so it can be a device server just as easily. I'd really rather everything go through my WHS machine, but I'd take stability over convenience.
So the only thing left is to move CQC from the kitchen PC back onto the WHS machine. But I think I'm going to wait another week to make sure it REALLY is stable before doing that.
