Brultech 1240 via EtherBee not connecting

Having a problem getting communication going. Anyone played with the Etherbee connection?

New installation. Followed instructions, ran the etherbee configurator, set the ip address to the local computer, saved it successfully, but the top box to the right continues to say 'Not Connected'. Did the F1 reset on the 1240, no change. ECM Server shows a yellow box for the TCP port number.

Can search for the etherbee and the saved results will read back.

Have tried with the etherbee connected via a router, and direct to the pc with a crossover cable, same results.

Anyone with advice?

Paul

I've been able to successfully receive and decode packets via EtherBee. When I run the configurator and set my IP address, the top right of the dialog always say 'Not Connected', but it has been configured successfully.

After you run the Etherbee configurator, now run the ECM-1240 configuration program. Can you connect and receive data?

No

When I run the ECM-1240 Interface Application 2.03 and try to connect via tcp I only get a yellow tcp/ip port box, never goes to green. (port number are the same (8083)

I have tried from a distance of 4 feet and about 35 feet, same results.

I purchased mine over two months ago and still it does not work. It sounds like I am experiencing the same problem(s) as you. Here is what I have done:

1) Turn off wireless network
2) Unplug EtherBee
3) Uninstall all Brultech software
4) Turn off Kaspersky firewall
5) Install EtherBee software
6) Run EtherBee software
7) Plug in EtherBee to my switch (not my router) using RJ-45 cable
8) Plug in EtherBee to receptacle (green light is on solid, yellow light is on and flickering)
9) Click "Search" in EtherBee software.
10) Received EtherBee details. Serial tab shows 19200 for Speed. Option tab has all 0s.
11) Clicked “Save Settingsâ€. Received “Saved Successfully†message box.
12) Installed ECM-1240 Interface software (version 1.6)
13) Replaced “ECM-1240 Interface.exe†with “ECM Interface ver2.03.exe†and renamed it
14) Ran ECM-1240 Interface Application software.
15) Communication Type set to TCP/IP, Port set to 8083.
16) Clicked “Connect†TCP/IP Port box background changes to yellow.
17) On the XBee Commands tab no data is being received.
18) Pressed the F1 button on the ECM-1240 for about 10 seconds and then released it. After several seconds the On LED turns on and is solid and the Data LED begins to flash. The EtherBee (about 20 feet away) yellow light is still flickering and the data light on the switch port where the EtherBee is connected is also flickering.
19) On the XBee Commands tab I click “+++†and receive nothing.
20) Rebooted machine and tried again with the Interface software still nothing after clicking "+++"

I also tried connecting the EtherBee unit to my router and it makes no difference.

Paul B. also sent me a new EtherBee unit still nothing. I am not sure what else to try and I have not heard back from Paul if there is anything else to do. Also,

1) I save the settings to the EtherBee, restart the software and none of the settings are saved. I have to search again and half the time the settings are never found. I have to unplug the EtherBee and plug it back in for the software to find the settings.
2) I did once actually see data but the settings can never be obtained on the ECM-1240 Setup tab and the Stop Real-Time button seems to do nothing as the data keeps coming. The next time I start up the IA software no data is received.

I would also like to know if anyone has gotten this to work. I am starting to think that the wireless component of the system was not tested very thoroughly. I love the concept and the hardware seems to be first-rate but the software leaves a lot to be desired. I do not know what else to try. After messing with this thing off and on in the evenings for many weeks I am almost to the point of having to return everything.

Interesting!

Could the problem be with the internal 1240 radio vs the remote one?

With all your messing around, did you ever get a green port box on the communication tab?

Will get them on the phone tomorrow. Has to be more than you and me with this problem.

The Etherbee works here, followed the directions. I have found a bug in either the etherbee or the 1240, not sure which. If software is NOT connected to the etherbee/1240, the Etherbee floods the network with packets. As long as something is connected, all is fine.

Mine is running well right now. You've probably done this 10 times, but here is the sequence that worked for me (in this order)

(1) connect the EtherBee to power and the network. No software running. Located near ECM.

(2) depress F1 on the ECM for 6 seconds. Lights go out, lights come on and yellow light blinks if it is in realtime mode

(2a) lights on EtherBee only mean that it is connected and seeing packets from the network -- any packets, not necessarily anything you are interested in.

(3) Start EtherBee configuration utility.

(4) Click SEARCH. Should return MAC address, etc of EtherBee

(5) Check DHCP MODE, Click CLIENT MODE, enter SERVER IP (your PC IP address), Port (next to your IP ADDR) should be 8083

(6) On SERIAL tab, speed should be 19200

(7) On Option Tab, ALL 0s

(8) Click SAVE SETTINGS

(9) Close Program

(10) Start ECM Interface version 2.03

(11) Click DEVICE MODEL ECM-1240

(12) Click COMMUNICTION TYPE TCP/IP

(13) Fill in TCP/IP PORT = 8083

(14) Click CONNECT

At this point, the 8083 should go GREEN

The only time I had trouble communicating, I started over with pairing via F1 and all started working again.

Shawn,

I did have some success today.

I entered all Etherbee configs manually.

DCHP not checked
Local IP + an ip address not being used. Default port (10003)
Std subnet 255.255.255.0
Default gateway (do not have internet access)
Server ip = the pc ip address with 8083 for the port
Client checked

Saved it and I connected fine.

Did run into a runtime error 6 after I tried moving about 35 feet away. Suspect it is a distance issue.

Also mention you to Paul B, he was going to look at his notes for you. Said it rang a bell. ??

I have no experience with their rf, so have no idea as to what to expect for range. My house is a bit of a range problem anyway. All interior walls are block / plaster, exterior brick / block/ plaster, plays havoc on low power rf.

Shawn

Interesting!

Could the problem be with the internal 1240 radio vs the remote one?

With all your messing around, did you ever get a green port box on the communication tab?

Will get them on the phone tomorrow. Has to be more than you and me with this problem.

Paul

Yes, the one time I was receiving data the port box was green. Let me know what they say tomorrow. I sent Paul B. an email last week but have not heard anything from him.

Shawn

The Etherbee works here, followed the directions. I have found a bug in either the etherbee or the 1240, not sure which. If software is NOT connected to the etherbee/1240, the Etherbee floods the network with packets. As long as something is connected, all is fine.
I had the same problem, it sends out too many ARP requests... I solved it by switching to server mode and connecting to it on port 10003. I am using my own software though, other apps would have to add support to connect to the Etherbee rather than accepting a connection (which is generally easier anyway)...

Thanks to the dedicated help (and even-keeled help when I was frustrated) of Paul B. my system is now up and running. I am not sure what the problem was but Paul had me use the new version of the EtherBee configurator software that allows for firmware updates. He then had me update the firmware and now I am getting the data reliably.

Both the new EtherBee software and firmware are available on the Brultech support page.

My next step is to setup a dedicated computer to collect the data from the ECM-1240. I am looking at getting a fitPC. Once I get that done I would like to get another ECM-1240 to monitor a 100 amp subpanel that I have in an addition.

Shawn,

You may also want to take a look at the tenholder software, I have found it very useful. It now allows you to look at a graph of up to 24 hours of "real-time" data. Great for seeing what goes on when your eyes are closed, or at work (eyes open or closed B) ).

Thanks for your patience Shawn. The new EtherBee/Etherport firmware has solved issues for other customers. The download site is:

FYI, a new ECM-1240 firmware version will soon be available which makes use of the data-logging ability.
