Brultech ECM1240 Firmware upgrade failure

Hi Guys,

I have been having some issues with my 1240 updating the Dashboard software correctly, so I decided to upgrade all of the software including the the firmware via the latest ECM1240 IA. I downloaded the latest firmware from Brultech and used the IA application button to update the firmware....

BUT...

The update software launched a command line window which hangs with a command "waiting for HC08 reset ACK"

Since this happened, I have been unable to communicate with the ECM1240.

Hmmm, I am stumped, never had this problem before and comms were fine prior to the upgrade. Any ideas what to do from here would be much appreciated!

TIA guys,
Andrew

I would suggest the Brultech forum also, for official assistance.

But, when a similar issue happened with me, it was due to my using a USB-serial converter. The converter worked fine for day-to-day comms, but failed during firmware updates. I used a real serial port and the firmware upgraded fine.

I have heard this issue of firware updates failing via non true serial links as well. I for one will be using a Quadtech for normal use but put it on direct serial for firmware type upgrades for any device.

Hi Guys,

With respect, the Brultech forum has little or no activity. I was'nt going to hold my breath and hope for an anwser over there! Anyway, the problem resolved. I am using a standard COM port serial connection between my automation PC and the 1240, I power cycled the 1240 maybe 3-4 times, and kept trying the update. On the last attempt, it worked. The new firmware resolved all Dashboard and GPM issues, so at the end of the day a good result was achieved. I hope this helps someone else in the future! :(

Cheers lads,
Andrew

With respect, I have seen Paul & Ben pretty quick to respond to posts on their forum. You cannot expect a small Brultech staff to patrol many forums when they now have their own. Yes, the traffic on their forum was light the first month of operation, but a knowledge base doesn't grow if people don't feed it.

I agree. I have had excellent and quick help from them recently.

Has anyone figured this out?

When I tried to do the update I was getting this message: "waiting for HC08 reset ACK" and a hang. I'm using a real serial port connected to the ECM-1240. Comms seem to work fine otherwise. I cant find a documented procedure for doing the update. Only the button in the interface app. After a couple of attempts, it started getting the ACK, but then would quickly show a message about a "Calibration break pulse count" and terminate before I could read the rest of the message.

http://www.etherbee.com/BrultechSampleSite....php?p=250#p250 from the thread "Complete Instructions for 1240 Firmware Upgrading"

Thanks Wayne... unfortunately the instructions are not quite "complete". Following them gets to the state described above with the waiting for ACK message. Lucky for me, shortly after I posted Paul B sent me an email with a PDF describing the full procedure. Why they have the software but not the instructions on their web site is mystery to me. I can only guess they like answering support email.

While I can only recommend getting and following the official instructions, to answer the original question here, I'll say that the ACK that is expected is generated by the user pressing the F1 button on the side of the ECM-1240.
