Carbon Monoxide Detector Recommendation?

I purchased 2 ESL 240 CO detectors for my house. They are great.

The only problem I have is I put a mud ring in the wall to mount them to and they are too small for the mud ring. I should have just poked the wire out the wall and screwed them to the sheetrock when I installed them. I also could have mounted the mud ring sideways and that would have worked. Oh well... I'll get it right on the next house...

Is there a certain lifetime for CO detectors such that after so many years they should be replaced? I've been in my house 7 years now and the CO, smoke, heat and gas detectors are all 7 years old.

I tested the gas detectors a few months ago, and they still worked when exposed to gas from a butane lighter.

System Sensor CO detectors have a life span of 6 years and let you know when they need to be replaced called the "end of life" signal http://www.systemsensor.com/pdf/A05-0402-000.pdf.
