Cheap NAS

Nice review post!

Eww...only 48-49 meg/sec...

I wish the guy would have mentioned what he used as his test PC. If it was anything except Vista SP1+, or a newer Linux, it was probably running SMB1.0...which would severely limit the speed of the unit...

Here is a thread from one of the deal sites that is pretty lengthy with lots of people discussing how to change the OEM software to something else. This is really a full computer, which makes 'hacking' it as easy as changing OS on any other computer. Pretty cool stuff. There is also a whole forum on one of the WHS sites dedicated to running WHS on this machine. (Although I think self building is probably better once you have to upgrade and add storage).

Edit - fixed link.

I still have my FreeNAS box running. Its pretty loaded now with both Raid setup drives and spare IDE / SATA drives. Whats nice with it is that I have rebuilt it a "few" times and all of the data drives have remained intact.

I have semi retired my US Robotics box as its really slow but still useful. The Dell 2003 RAID server still running strong along with the embedded Windows2003 Raid box and NDAS box. I'm noticing though that I have copies of copies of copies of files.

I couldn't pass on the deal though for $135 / small footprint / 4 drives.

I was really tempted...so much so that I had one in cart...but I opted no, as I only have $54 in my fun $$ account.

Can't spend more then that at this time.. :-(

If you search the site he does list the PC that he does all of his NAS tests with somewhere. I remember reading it somewhere.

I believe it's a Vista SP1 machine

Here are some various tranfer speeds I have with various devices on the network using my desktop (XP SP3) at 100 Mbps (guessing that line speed would be around 12.5 Mb/s). Will add Linux & BSOD to list.

Office desktop -> .5Gb file to Windows 2003 embedded NAS (Raid 5) - 10 Mb/s
Office desktop -> .5Gb file to NDAS device - 4.5 Mb/s
Office desktop -> .5Gb file to Windows 2003 server - 11 Mb/s
Office desktop -> .7GB file to FreeNas Server - 11 Mb/s

Here's a graphical picture of file transfer from FreeNas

I'm thinking that's because you are on XP (SMB1.0)

Are you saying SMB2.0 will do line speed using drag and drop from a Windows 7 PC to a Windows Server 8 share?

I am pretty close right now with 11Mb/s. If I do FTP most likely will get to line speed.

I've tweaked my FreeNas SMB settings to achieve said speeds.

Received NAS today.

It is labeled Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo Home Server.

It has a smaller footprint than the US Robotics 8700 (that does Jumbo Frames but smaller total capacity than this one) that I have. Guess I can also upgrade the CPU/Memory on this device from what I am reading about it.

As I play with it (rip it apart/upgrade it) will take some pics.

I might make this another FreeNas box.

Played with WHS for a month or so ago last year. It didn't give any more though than I already had. Its a nice SOHO/Home network server OS.

Yep, from my research, that's my understanding...right now I don't have two machines to totally test, but I did an FTP transfer, and that is FAR FAR (i.e. almost 2x) faster then transferring things over the window protocol (Right now, my fastest WINDOWS Share transfer method is Win7 to Win2k3 Server, which is faster then WinXP to Win2k3 Server).

Yes, especially on Gigabit...the overhead kills you on the older windows sharing protocol...not really noticeable on 100base-t

Just "starting" to build out a gig network. Initially only in the "server" and NAS "farm" which is a mix of 2003/Linux/BSD servers. The fastest one being the BSD FreeNas box. Mostly looking for speed when transferring movies (1-16 gigs per movie). Files are really not a big deal. Getting up to plus 40 Mb/s would be great for these transfers. Currently only stream audio (MP3's or Internet radio) and movies are keep on the Mediabox (Mediagate). I have tested the video streaming and it works fine even though the Mediagate box is the slowest of the bunch.

Check out moving one of my PCs/Laptops over to Windows 7. Thanks Dan.
