Connecting RJ31X to HAI - Phone goes dead when connected

Hi,

I am trying to connect an RJ31X jack to my Homeautomation/Security system. The phones work fine when the Jack is not plugged in to the module and connected to the HAI system. However once connected, the security system shows all OK.

I have attached a photo of my current connections.

Basically I have Blue and White-Blue coming in from the Telco. I have connected the module as follows:

Blue from telco >>>>>>> Green on XJ31X
White-Blue from telco >>>>>>> Red on XJ31X

Grey on XJ31 >>>>>>> Blue-White going to House Phone Jacks
Brown on XJ31 >>>>>>> Blue going to House Jacks

As I mentioned, the phones all work fine as long as I dont plug in the RJ31 jack. The moment I do so, the phone line goes dead but security system shows all OK with the phones.

Any help in connecting this properly would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It looks like everything is wired correctly according to this article. Perhaps there is a setting on the alarm system that is making it seize the phone line and therefore it is disconnecting the regular house phones. That is the standard operating proceedure during an alarm event, but perhaps something is set where it is always seizing the phone line.

I would check the wiring at the HAI system. Make sure you have the green, red, brown, and grey wires from the RJ-31X jack connected to the corrected terminals on the HAI system. The terminal blocks on the HAI system are depluggable. Remove the terminal block with the phone terminals and make sure that a pin on the terminal block is not bent under. Evidently the HAI system is seeing the incoming phone line since it shows OK when the cable is plugged in, but there may be a problem with the phone connection going back to the RJ-31X.

Thanks Brian,

I rechecked all the connections and re connected them all. Still same issue. However, I am guessing perhaps the connecting wire that came with the module maybe the wrong kind or defective. Instead of it having only 4 wires (Green, Red, Brown and Gray) It has 8. Perhaps someone at AutomatedOutlet could verify as I purchased my system from them.

Thanks

I VERY often see phone colors mixed up, so I would just say that since the blue wire connected here should be blue, it must be correct.

I'd start in the phone panel outside, and follow the wires out and back. There are two wires you need and they are called Tip and Ring. The Tip is positive in polarity and typically colored GREEN. The Ring is negative and typically colored RED. So RED is Negative, and Green is Positive. Follow the lines out and back and using a volt meter or other tester, verify its all correct. Also verify it to the screws on the HAI panel. You probably have two mixed up somewhere along the line.

Also check the shorting pins on the back of the rj45 plug sometimes they dont make good contact. Happens in the feild all the time and some rj31x jacks are bad.

OK I decided to make my own cable.. but the connection to the HAI system is only marked as green, red, brown, and grey. It doesnt specify which pins on the RJ45 should connect to the connectors on the HAI.

I have shorted pin 1 and 4 together and 5 and 8 together. So I think the wire is ready as long as I know where to connect it on the HAI board.

Thanks

If you have a Butt set or a meter check to see if you have dialtone or voltage on the Gray and brown pair, If not the RJ31X is not making good contact.

You're right that cable that comes with the RJ31x is not very long and if the telco doesn't put the jack close to the Omni then you have to make your own cable. If you look carefully at the supplied cable you should be able to see where the colors go on the RJ45. If you are getting old and blind like me...

The red/green pair should go the the line in, and the brown/gray pair go to the house phones. On the RJ45 connector, red/green should go to the center pair (pins 4/5) and the brown/gray should go to the outer pair (1/8). Older (several years back)controllers were tip/ring sensitive, but the newer ones are not.

Verify this and make sure you have a good crimp on the RJ45.
