Controlling a light switch, no neutral

There is one other option aside from pulling the neutral wire.. but it is also a bit of a hassle. We have used it a few times for customers who simply could NOT pull the neutral.

The load itself must have a neutral running to it. Up there, you can install a switching in-line module. No matter the technology, this module would receive the signal and switch the light. It will connect to your line, neutral, and load wire.

Next,

a) connect the previous "load" wire to the neutral up at the junction box where you installed the switching in-line module. Although this wire is probably blue or black, it has now functionally become a white wire, your neutral. Be sure to mark it as so, clearly, in the switch box. A piece of masking tape with N or Neutral written on it will do... some electricians just put an electrical tape flag on it.

;) In the switch box, install a transmitting switch, using the previous load wire as the neutral. With X10 and UPB the options are numerous. With Z-wave, AFAIK, you are limited to scene controllers like Leviton's single or 4 button. Program this switch to send the signal to the module in the ceiling.

Involves twice as many parts , but will get you the relay control you require along with remote control possibility.

That's basically what I was trying to decribe above but probably wasn't clear enough ;)

It's a little more expensive but it gets the job done; I had to do that at my house as well.
